Chapter 304
“It’s been a while.”
“Oh my goodness, Rosalyn! Come in. Are you sure you should be out like this?”
Sebelia hurried down the stairs, surprise written all over her face when she saw Rosalyn.
Last she’d heard, Rosalyn had been seriously wounded by the knights brought by Gren and was still recovering. She was supposedly doing much better, but not enough to be walking around like this.
What had happened? Seeing the worry on Sebelia’s face, Rosalyn gently squeezed her hand and offered a reassuring smile.
“I’m feeling a lot better, so please don’t worry. Besides, I really wanted to thank you in person.”
Sebelia shook her head, since Rosalyn had already sent her several thank-you letters. But Rosalyn wouldn’t be dissuaded. She turned to the palace knights sent by the Crown Prince for her protection and issued a calm order.
“Move everything we brought inside. His Highness chose each item himself, so please be extra careful not to damage anything.”
“Yes!”
The imperial knights seemed unusually obedient to Rosalyn. Sebelia knew Rosalyn had been recovering under the protection of the royal family, but there was a certain loyal air about the knights that went beyond simple duty.
They’re acting more like loyal vassals than simply serving a guest…
Just as that thought crossed her mind, Rosalyn leaned closer, with a shy whisper.
“If it’s alright, can we continue our conversation inside? I said I was fine, but honestly, it’s hard for me to stand for long.”
Sebelia was startled. She’d been caught daydreaming in front of a guest—how careless.
“Of course, I should have offered sooner. I’m sorry for keeping you standing.”
“Not at all.”
Sebelia led Rosalyn to the nearest sitting room off the entryway. It didn’t face the garden, but it was sunny and offered a lovely view. A servant brought tea and pastries, and for a while, the two women sat together in silence.
Then, out of nowhere, Rosalyn let out a startled shriek.
“Ah!”
“Rosalyn!”
Sebelia immediately moved to call for help, but Rosalyn waved her off before she could speak. Sebelia calmed her racing heart and moved closer, checking Rosalyn’s face. Her color was too good for her to be feeling unwell.
“Are you alright, Rosalyn? If you’re not feeling well, you should go back and rest. We can meet another time.”
“No, that’s not it…”
Rosalyn looked flustered, glancing around wide-eyed. Clearly, her scream hadn’t come from any pain. She hesitated for a moment, then leaned over and picked something up from the floor.
“This little one stepped on my foot.”
In her slender hand was a gray cat, its fur soft as butter.
“…Maya?”
Sebelia called, and as if in reply, Maya let out a long, drowsy meow, blinking her sleepy green eyes.
“I didn’t know you had a cat.”
Rosalyn said, setting Maya on her lap and gently stroking her. Maya accepted the attention like a cat thoroughly used to affection, closing her eyes contentedly.
The picture of the pale, dark-haired girl and the gray cat looked so peaceful and beautiful, it seemed fit to be called ‘A Moment of Peace’. Sebelia couldn’t help but smile at the scene.
While Rosalyn was distracted with Maya, Sebelia took the opportunity to whisper a quick instruction to the servants who had rushed in after the commotion.
“Have a carriage ready, just in case.”
“Understood.”
The servant replied quietly, leaving the room.
Turning back to Rosalyn, Sebelia asked.
“Would you like to stay for lunch, if you’re feeling up to it?”
“Oh.”
Rosalyn blinked, a little flustered, still playing with Maya’s paws. Clearly, she hadn’t planned to stay that long.
So she must have come with a particular reason in mind…
It was rare for someone to go to the trouble of visiting in person just to repeat words of thanks already sent in letters. Sebelia sipped her tea, giving Rosalyn time to gather her thoughts.
Eventually, Rosalyn seemed to summon her courage. She cleared her throat and spoke carefully.
“First, I wanted to thank you again for saving my life. Miss Bella, no, I should call you Lady Bella Ashrent now. I’m sorry.”
“You don’t need to. Feel free to speak, Rosalyn.”
Seeing how nervous Rosalyn was, Sebelia tried to set her at ease.
“And as I’ve told you before, I saved you because I wanted to. Passing out afterwards was my own fault for overexerting myself. There’s no need for you to feel guilty.”
Rosalyn’s eyes widened, and she nodded slowly, clearly pondering something. Sebelia took the chance to press a bit further.
“But that’s not the only reason you came today, is it?”
“Huh?”
“You picked a day when Dehart would be away from the house, didn’t you?”
