Chapter 320
Whether the article was Shateian’s doing or not, that was now clear. But there was one more thing left to settle.
“Are the events described in the article true?”
Sebelia wanted to know whether Dehart had really visited all those families, and if he truly kept encountering young ladies of marriageable age at each stop.
Her sharp question made Shateian click his tongue inwardly.
Well, this is awkward.
He hadn’t expected her to be so direct. He tried to dodge the question, but of course, there was no escaping it. For a moment, he regretted fleeing the tedious banquet for the supposed safety of the Inverness mansion—but now he found the situation almost amusing.
He let out a sigh, and Sebelia pressed him further.
“I trust Your Highness would know the answer.”
At last, Shateian lowered his gaze from the sky and met Sebelia’s eyes. Her voice was calm, her gaze steady, but there was a storm of emotion inside that he couldn’t quite identify. It probably wasn’t anything good.
After a brief pause, he made up his mind.
“To tell you the truth—yes. While I wouldn’t call it ‘midnight rendezvous,’ as the article claims, it’s true that he’s been visiting several houses and strengthening ties, just as described. And yes, there have been eligible young ladies present at each of those homes.”
“I see.”
Sebelia’s surprisingly mild reaction made Shateian tilt his head slightly. He’d half expected her to get angry. But maybe it didn’t matter, he thought.
You reap what you sow.
When you try too hard to hide things, it always ends up causing trouble. He nearly laughed at the irony, thinking to himself how interesting things would get once Dehart returned.
Shateian walked ahead, masking his thoughts, and spoke over his shoulder to Sebelia.
“The wind is getting chilly. Let’s head back. Rosalyn should be awake by now.”
The Crown Prince informed Rosalyn, who is now recovered, that the imperial doctor would start making regular visits. And just before leaving, he shared a brief word with Sebelia.
From that day forward, an odd procession of mysterious items began arriving at the Inverness estate. Most were carried straight to the garden annex—off-limits even to the servants, who could only wonder about their purpose.
A week passed, and at last, Dehart crossed the city walls—a return Sebelia had long awaited.
“He’s expected to arrive in ten minutes,” announced the butler.
Sebelia stood, gently dislodging Maya from her lap. She met the gray cat’s gaze for a moment before heading out, walking briskly to greet Dehart.
Beyond the wide open doors, she spotted the black carriage bearing the Inverness family crest. There were no others in its wake—it was so large that it needed no entourage. The two enormous black horses pulling it were famed throughout the north; stronger and more spirited than most, they were usually trained for war.
No one in their right mind would dare disrespect the Duke’s carriage. Watching its imposing approach, Sebelia couldn’t help but smile, thinking how perfectly it suited its owner.
The carriage slowed to a stop before her. Even before the coachman could bow, the door swung open and a man with a panther’s grace leapt out.
“Bella.”
His deep voice resonated through the air as he reached out a hand. Without hesitation, Sebelia rushed into his arms. Above her head, the man’s laughter echoed.
“What’s this? Did you really miss me that much?”
She simply looked up at him, taking in his features—finally seeing him clearly after two long weeks apart. She could feel the strength of his arms holding her close and met his gaze, which was as warm as ever.
The man, with black hair neatly combed back, gazed at her with passion.
Feeling reassured, Sebelia snuggled deeper into his embrace. Dehart was momentarily startled by her uncharacteristic show of affection, but he didn’t dare push her away. Instead, he glared fiercely at anyone still peeking through the open door.
In the end, Eli, reading the mood, hurried off to close the door and chase away any lingering reporters. Only then did Dehart allow himself to truly savor their heartfelt reunion.
Sebelia finally spoke when Eli returned, having cleared the area.
“Dehart.”
“Mm?”
“I’m so glad you’re home safe.”
A soft smile appeared on Dehart’s lips. But his brief happiness was quickly interrupted…
