Chapter 30
At that moment, Venya realized that the strange sensation that had followed her like a shadow was a kind of signal.
A danger signal sent by her instincts, telling her that Giselle Vellasi had realized she was a spy sent by Grand Duke Barietsch.
At the same time, she even realized the unnecessary certainty that her ears had not been wrong.
The fact that all the maids who always stayed by Giselle’s side had left could not be mere coincidence. It was clear that Giselle had secretly arranged things so that only the two of them would remain.
‘When on earth did she find out?’
It felt as though the world before her eyes had gone dark. Even so, Venya quickly suppressed her agitation and composed her expression.
She knew it would not work on Giselle, who was interrogating her while already certain, but she deliberately blustered and feigned ignorance.
“How would I, an ordinary maid, know how Grand Duke Barietsch is doing? I’ve never even met him in person, Miss.”
“……”
“And you aren’t interested in the Grand Duke, Miss. So I don’t know why you would concern yourself with his well-being.”
“I love him.”
“…Pardon?”
“I liked him quite a lot from the moment I first saw him. He’s my type.”
At the declaration that dropped like a bomb, her head now felt dizzy and she was dumbfounded. She couldn’t understand the meaning of Giselle’s words at all.
Giselle Vellasi had rejected Raven’s wedding proposal and wanted an engagement instead. As if that were not enough, she wanted to break even that engagement, which was why Venya was here now.
If Giselle loved Raven, there would have been no need to reject his proposal, and no reason to bring up breaking off the engagement. Yet she was suddenly saying she loved Raven. There could be no words more contradictory than that in the world.
This was evidence that Giselle did not love him.
“It seems you don’t believe what I’m saying.”
As if she had already expected that reaction, Giselle’s attitude toward the silent Venya was simply calm. She seemed not to care in the slightest whether Venya believed her or not.
As if supporting that judgment, Giselle soon added.
“Whether you believe it or not is your choice. But that doesn’t change the fact that I love His Highness.”
“……”
“I already know that His Highness set spies loose in order to watch me. And you are one of them.”
Venya swallowed dryly.
If her identity was discovered, she had expected that no matter how much she blustered, she would not get through it safely. Even so, having it confirmed so directly made the world before her eyes go dark. Now, the only thing left was being dismissed and driven out.
Moreover, Giselle also knew that she was not the only spy. A major purge would soon begin, and it was only a matter of time before all the spies Raven had planted were driven out.
Just thinking about how she should deal with this terrible situation made her head throb.
Having resigned herself to everything, Venya shut her eyes tightly and waited for the punishment that would fall upon her. Then Giselle said something unexpected.
“So, would you help me so that the love between His Highness and me can be realized?”
“…Pardon?”
For an instant, Venya’s eyes flew open, and she asked back blankly. Giselle told her again, as though making sure she remembered what she had just said.
“His Highness loves me, and I love His Highness too. So I want you to help me in the middle so that our love can be fulfilled. Among the spies he planted, you’re the only one who can watch me the closest.”
“…What exactly are you telling me to do?”
Venya, who had forgotten her duty for a moment, carefully asked back.
Was she telling her to become some bridge of love between them instead of a spy watching Giselle Vellasi?
Just as that absurd thought suddenly came to mind, Giselle’s confident answer flowed out as though she had been waiting.
“Help me slip through His Highness’s surveillance and break off the engagement with him.”
“…Pardon?”
It seemed today was going to be filled with nothing but surprising things all day long.
At the utterly absurd words that came out as things went from bad to worse, Venya couldn’t hide the expression that naturally crumpled on her face.
Until just now, she had said she loved Raven, and now she was asking Venya to help her break off the engagement. No matter how much human hearts were said to be like reeds, words changing once every minute was difficult to dismiss as mere caprice.
