Chapter 31
Even as Venya showed signs of displeasure, Giselle paid it no mind and added an explanation.
“I don’t want some ordinary, commonplace love. I want to become his possession.”
“Possession?”
“Yes. From head to toe, from my gaze to my breath, every last part of me would belong to His Highness.”
“Why would you… want something like that?”
At her words, Venya put into words the question that could only naturally come to mind. A sense of distance could be felt in her gaze as she looked at Giselle.
Giselle merely smiled peacefully.
“Just because.”
“……”
“That would be better than ordinarily confessing our love to each other and getting married.”
It was an emotion Venya simply couldn’t understand.
If one were human, they would normally like confirming each other’s feelings in an ordinary way and getting married. But Giselle continued speaking without changing her expression, as though everyone wanted that kind of love.
“In order to do that, I need to provoke His Highness’s possessiveness as much as possible. And to do that, nothing is more effective than pushing him away. I have to make him grow frantic because he can’t win the heart of the person he loves, until eventually, he thinks he should possess her body at least. I plan to incite that impulse to its limit.”
“…Are you telling me to help you with that? To help you, Miss, while you love him on the inside, but deceive His Highness on the outside by pretending you don’t love him and pretending you want to break off the engagement?”
“Yes. Now you understand.”
Giselle smiled brightly. It was a smile as beautiful as a painting, but to Venya, who had learned what lay inside her, it was only horrifying.
“You only need to help me a little. Tell me how to slip through the surveillance network, and report to His Highness at the timing I instruct, pretending you’ve discovered something strange. If we repeat that a few times, my love with His Highness will be connected for all to see.”
“……”
“What do you think? Won’t you help me, Venya?”
“……”
“In exchange for you helping me, I’ll hide the fact that the people of House Barietsch, including you, have entered as spies.”
“Miss, you’re truly…”
After remaining silent for a long while, Venya quietly opened her mouth.
“Truly, a strange person.”
She spoke her honest feelings.
“In truth, I’m not even sure whether you really love His Highness. But if you truly do love him, Miss, I wish you would just love him in an ordinary way. Don’t dress up actions that hurt another person as love.”
“……”
“I’ll leave my disposal entirely to you, Miss. You may drive me out, and you may also expose the other hidden spies besides me. I’m my Master’s person, and therefore, I cannot take part in deceiving my Master.”
With her eyes filled with strength, Venya held firm. She didn’t know what result her choice would bring, but she couldn’t betray Raven and help Giselle.
If Giselle had said that she wanted to confess, but their relationship had gone wrong because of various things and she wanted to restore it, Venya would have gladly helped her.
Raven still loved Giselle, who wanted to break off her engagement with him. Restoring her relationship with him was no different from saying that his love would come true. Giselle’s demand was the exact opposite of that. That was why Venya, as Raven’s person, could not possibly accept her proposal.
However, contrary to her determination, once she actually spat the words out, the fist she had clenched was wet with sweat. Her heart beat as though it would burst, and her mouth dried out completely.
Amid the extreme tension, Venya quietly waited for Giselle’s reaction.
At last, Giselle raised her eyebrows once, then gave a bland answer.
“Is that so?”
“……”
“Then that’s fine.”
After that, as if all her business was finished, she turned her body and opened the book she had closed. Flutter, flutter, the pages turned as they cut through the silence.
Standing blankly before her as she turned her gaze back to the book, Venya stared at her in bewilderment.
‘It’s really over just like this?’
Since she had been discovered as a spy and had even refused her proposal, Venya had thought Giselle would at least threaten her.
But Giselle merely turned the pages with a calm face.
‘What on earth is this…’
With everything around them silent, only Venya sank into confusion.
Venya even felt as though the time she had spent conversing with Giselle about her and Raven just moments ago had been a dream. As if she had had a waking dream.
“Miss.”
Is that really all you have to say to me?
She had just opened her mouth to ask that, but just then, the maids who had left their places returned, and Venya had no choice but to go back to her place.
