Chapter 316
To further dispel any remaining doubts, I added another excuse.
“The reason I knew the guiding allergy might improve is because… shortly before the imprinting, Lord Claude accidentally touched Lord Oscar. At that time, Lord Claude did not have an allergic reaction.”
“……”
“The only change in Lord Claude’s environment was my presence. I simply speculated that if Lord Daniel received guiding from me, he might also see some improvement… As you know, not much is known about this condition, so I figured it was worth a try.”
This should be sufficient. A plausible story to explain why I knew about Daniel’s improvement in his guiding allergy and to convince them that I had already completed imprinting with Claude.
They would likely conclude that there was nothing more to gain from a Guide who had already imprinted. Perhaps they might even decide to kill me on the spot.
However, there was one thing they didn’t know.
Claude and I had not imprinted.
The reason for not imprinting was me. I was unsure about my decision to choose him. Many decisions I had made on my own brought consequences too heavy for me to bear.
But in hindsight, that decision seemed to have been the right one. Not for my sake, but for his.
Claude must be without flaws. Once, he had the critical weakness of a guiding allergy due to Hermann’s vile schemes, but not anymore. I had cured him.
So, even if I were to die and leave this world, he could remain a perfect being forever. Because now, I was no longer an irreplaceable presence to him.
Of course, he would be sad if he lost me, but he would overcome it someday. He could receive guiding from another Guide who would comfort him.
It would be a lie to say it wasn’t sad. Not being able to see him again, and another Guide by his side instead of me. But I didn’t wish for Claude to be unhappy.
I love him. I love him enough now to wish for his happiness over mine.
So, even if I were to die here and now, I could accept my fate humbly. It was better than enduring Hermann’s filthy touch to satisfy him.
Contrary to my expectations that Hermann would kill me immediately, he remained unexpectedly calm.
“A Guide who not only guides Espers with guiding allergies but even cures them…”
Hermann murmured quietly.
After pondering for a while, he suddenly asked a question, though not directed at me.
“What do you think? It sounds plausible to me.”
“I find it reasonable. Although we haven’t tracked the response of Test Subject 1… We have secured testimonies that Test Subject 2’s allergic reactions improved, allowing partial guiding.”
The Esper standing behind me answered.
“The conditions of Test Subjects 1 and 2, who had already started showing signs of rampage, suddenly improved. The only common factor between them was this Guide. Moreover, she is quite an unusual Guide. Her matching rate with Test Subjects 1 and 2 was exceptionally high.”
“……”
“So, her guiding might have interfered with the induced allergic reactions.”
After hearing this, Hermann remained silent for a while.
I thought he would conclude that I had completed the imprinting and kill me immediately if he believed my words. But he seemed to be deep in thought for quite some time.
Just when I felt a sense of foreboding…
“Indeed… It seems worthwhile to study further.”
“…What?”
“Miss Valentine, you… might prove to be unexpectedly useful to me.”
Hermann smiled, eyes glinting.
