Chapter 336
I heard it because I have ears, and I couldn’t help but pause. Even so, I pretended not to hear and continued wiping the table.
Well, it’s not like they were wrong. If they’re young, growing kids, none of them would dream of becoming an adult like me.
That happened, and later that evening, when I was about to change into my regular clothes after finishing my shift, the door to the break room, which also served as the changing room, suddenly opened, and the boss barged in. Fortunately, I hadn’t started changing yet.
〈Oh… sorry. Sorry about that. Were you changing?〉
〈It’s okay. I hadn’t started yet.〉
〈…….〉
After a brief pause, he suddenly asked me,
〈So… it seems like that boyfriend of yours doesn’t come to pick you up anymore. Did you break up?〉
It seemed like an out-of-the-blue question, but I just went along with it. After all, Sunbae used to come by around closing time, so it made sense that he’d be curious.
So I answered honestly.
〈Yes, we broke up.〉
〈I see… I understand.〉
〈…Can I change now?〉
〈Oh, right. Sorry about that…〉
The boss quickly closed the door and left.
By the time I returned home after my shift, it was already pitch dark.
Normally, my mom would have been asleep by then, but she was still awake. Maybe she thought I was ignoring all her messages as a form of rebellion or defiance against her authority.
〈You were out meeting a man again, weren’t you! Probably spreading your legs under some guy while ignoring your mother’s calls, you crazy b-tch.〉
My mom hurled insults and started hitting me.
I knew it was better to just take it, but at that moment, I couldn’t hold back.
〈Do you think I’m you? Just stop it already!〉
I grabbed her arm and shoved her away, yelling.
My mom’s face was one of utter shock. Maybe it was the first time she realized that her daughter, who always quietly endured her outbursts, had actually grown taller and stronger than her.
〈…Mom, I just got back from work, and I’m really tired. I wasn’t out with a guy, and I’ve already broken up with that sunbae who called last time. So let’s talk tomorrow, after you’ve sobered up and we’re both clear-headed.〉
My mom stood there trembling, unable to say anything.
I ignored her and went into my room. I no longer had the emotional capacity to care about someone else’s wounded feelings.

Sunbae started a new relationship. His new girlfriend was one of my classmates.
She was part of the group of classmates I used to hang out with. She often asked me if I had any concerns about dating Sunbae.
The thought suddenly crossed my mind—could she have spoken badly about me to him? I found out later that she had liked that sunbae since the freshman orientation. I never guessed because she already had a boyfriend at the time.
So it’s possible to like one person while being in a relationship with someone else. I knew that in theory, but it still surprised me.
Since we were in the same department, I ran into them often. They couldn’t hide their affection for each other and made it obvious even during class.
Watching them, I thought—if that’s the kind of relationship Sunbae wanted, there was no way I could ever be the girlfriend he wanted.
My classmates sympathized with me and tried to comfort me, but it didn’t last long. They quickly distanced themselves from me. Since we only became close because I was dating Sunbae, it didn’t hurt much.
I overheard that Sunbae was saying bad things about me behind my back… but I didn’t care much. I just ignored it.
After school, I went straight to my part-time job. I paused while washing dishes and leaned against the sink. I wasn’t feeling well at all that day.
Suddenly, I felt a hand patting my back.
〈Are you having a hard time?〉
〈…….〉
〈Studying and working… you’re really going through a lot. Kids like you are rare these days… that’s why I keep worrying about you and wanting to take care of you.〉
The boss pressed his body against mine. He said he wanted to give me some pocket money, asking if I didn’t want to make money without having to work so hard.
