Chapter 145
Rubel pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on.
Well, there was nothing that woman could do even if she knew everything.
That’s why he had deliberately left some things there. But he kept feeling anxious. Eir often told Rubel that he was a headache, an unpredictable madman, but in truth, Rubel felt the opposite.
It was Eir who was unpredictable.
How many times had she surprised him and dragged him into things? When he described her existence as a trap, it wasn’t just because she had made him stray from the path of the divine, but more precisely because she made him confused and repeatedly lose his way from his predetermined path.
He couldn’t guess how much trouble she would cause him this time after finding out everything.
Rubel had never had difficulty making others move according to his will, but Eir constantly slipped through his fingers. And when standing before her, even Rubel didn’t feel like himself.
Even though he knew exactly what to say and how to act, he kept impulsively saying and doing different things.
Anyway, that woman will be fine where she is. At least that won’t change, so I shouldn’t worry. At worst, I’ll have to appease her anger after everything is over.
Rubel thought this while checking how far the sun had set through the small window.
The most frustrating thing about being confined here was that he could only receive urgent reports at set times.
And that he had to spend the rest of the time in boredom.
As he knelt quietly in prayer before the small altar, he heard someone approaching not long after. When Rubel opened his eyes, his subordinate entered with numerous reports to deliver.
He greeted his superior with a calm expression, as if he were simply visiting Rubel’s office rather than a prison cell.
Rubel waved his hand lightly to stop the knight from bowing his head in greeting.
“That’s enough. Start your report quickly. What about what I asked you to find out yesterday?”
“They’ve taken the bait, as expected. The witches’ movements are suspicious. Especially, as you said, the witch who disrupts minds has been expanding her activity radius everywhere. What should we do now?”
He answered with a slightly excited voice, unable to hide his joy at how well things were proceeding according to plan.
Meanwhile, Rubel lowered his head halfway and thought quietly.
Now it was confirmed by those words. The black rabbit that had been hovering around Eir was indeed the same witch who had transformed into a wolf and attacked him when Rubel had raided Alphadem’s hideout.
To make sure of this, Rubel had collected the black rabbit witch’s magic residue from the cliff and captured his shadow.
Using that as a pretext, he spread rumors about capturing the witch, and as expected, the mind-disrupting witch who seemed to be his friend began to move to rescue him.
“So he really is from Alphadem.”
Rubel muttered in a sinister voice.
It was the opposite of what Eir had said. When he had pestered and tormented Eir to reveal information about the black rabbit witch, she had finally disclosed just one thing after much patience.
‘That witch isn’t a bad person either.’
Her voice had been full of conviction.
She explained that the witch had helped her, was a disciple of her grandmother’s friend, and was a good witch, different from those of Alphadem.
Rubel wanted to immediately deny her claims, saying that was impossible, but without concrete evidence, he didn’t want to get into an argument, so he held back. But now, confirming that Eir’s words were false made him feel unpleasant.
It didn’t seem like Eir had deliberately lied to Rubel. The witch must have deceived her.
But he couldn’t guess the reason.
Why? Witches are cunning but don’t unnecessarily expose themselves without purpose.
What did they want from Eir?
Rubel pondered deeply.
Then he began to see things falling into place. That owl. It must have started with that owl. The witch must have wanted something from her since then.
