Chapter 146
Since the time monsters had swarmed, drawn blood, and completed a curse using her as a sacrifice.
Rubel frowned severely. Was that curse real after all? Rubel had thought he had misunderstood. But if the curse had transferred to Eir, and the black rabbit witch was lying and pretending to be friendly to obtain it, then this whole situation made perfect sense.
“Let’s try to catch that mind-disrupting witch first. Is that possible?”
“Yes. The Proxy has decided to send Lord Sortin. But Lord Sortin…….”
The subordinate’s voice grew quieter. Rubel raised an eyebrow, wondering what the issue was.
“Lord Sortin said he should take all the credit……. He made a fuss, saying he didn’t come here just to clean up after someone in jail.”
The subordinate shuddered as if the mere thought of Sortin made him sick. Sortin was one of God’s lions like Rubel, but while he was generous and didn’t hold grudges, he lacked thoughtfulness and was greedy for trivial things.
For example, if they sat at the same table and there was a basket of candies, he would have to eat them all himself.
Rubel, having expected this from the moment Sortin’s name was mentioned, sighed without surprise.
“Well, if that’s what he wants, let him have it.”
“Pardon?”
“What?”
“But, we’ve spent so long trying to catch them…….”
The subordinate, realizing Rubel’s gaze midway through his speech, forced himself to close his mouth. From his perspective, it was quite unfair. Even though they had found the decisive clue from the darkness collected at the cliff, they had invested a significant amount of time tracking those witches.
This trap they had set and the witches falling into it so obviously wouldn’t have been possible without their previous efforts. And now someone was trying to claim all the credit just for adding a small contribution at the end.
It wasn’t about losing the reward, but rather about the principle of the matter. But well, if that’s what the master wanted, what could he do? The subordinate simply bowed his head silently.
“The mind-disrupting witch is just bait anyway. What I want is that witch who can change his appearance at will. I have something important to say to him.”
There was an inexplicable ominousness in that quiet tone. The subordinate wondered if this lingering anger was still because of Chris’s death.
“But don’t witches usually make poor bait? They’re naturally cold-hearted and are famous for not caring much even if their comrades are captured.”
Indeed, despite capturing numerous witches repeatedly, they never revealed any useful information under torture, nor did they respond to persuasion as if they had no one precious to them.
These characteristics of witches were what made this task so difficult.
But Rubel quietly shook his head, as if he had some certainty.
“From what I saw, those two are different. They would give their lives for each other. I don’t know what kind of relationship they have.”
Just then, a sound indicated that the visitation time had ended. The subordinate bowed to Rubel and was about to retreat. But at that moment, Rubel’s careful voice stopped him.
“Is everything…… alright at home?”
The subordinate could tell exactly who Rubel was curious about, even though he had referred to them collectively as “home.”
His face darkened a bit. He had been anxiously clenching his fists, wondering when this question would come up, and the sudden inquiry made him nervous.
“Well…… Lord Abel visited her, I heard.”
“Eir?”
“Yes. Seems he was worried…….”
“Summon him here immediately to prevent any unnecessary actions.”
“Yes.”
The white iron bars descended from the ceiling as Rubel pressed his head firmly as if he had a headache. The subordinate hurriedly avoided them and left, while Rubel remained alone, imagining how Eir would react to this news.
Please stay still.
He desperately hoped she wouldn’t do anything rash.
