Chapter 171
‘That is……’
Light flashed in an instant. Eir raised her hand and squinted. The light she had seen from outside was apparently not an illusion. Such a sacred power penetrating her body.
‘This is the God’s Mirror.’
Perhaps because she was facing such an unexpected object, she could hardly move her body.
How did the witches come to possess this? Did they attack a temple and steal it? But if they had, there surely would have been a major commotion, yet she had never heard such talk in the Divine Empire.
In her confusion, Eir ultimately decided to examine this room more thoroughly.
Her physical condition was barely enough to escape, but even though she had given up being a priestess, she couldn’t just ignore a divine treasure being here without checking anything.
Eir eventually raised a bit of divine power to illuminate the darkness. Perhaps because she had been exposed to the sacred light emitted by the god’s mirror, she could feel her divine power returning, which had been useless no matter how hard she tried.
The low drawers and tall bookshelves were so packed with items that it was overwhelming just to briefly scan through them.
“A precious edition of the scripture, and is this holy water?”
Eir illuminated various objects with her divine power, exclaiming in admiration as she passed by. Even in the basement of the temple where Eir resided, there weren’t so many precious items like these.
Such valuable things…… they wouldn’t have been prepared for faithful believers hiding among the witches…….
“They really hold a grudge.”
Eir clicked her tongue as she looked around at everything.
It seemed they had studied everything possible to bring down the Divine Empire. Scriptures, holy water, swords used by holy knights, even books that they studied in childhood.
The witches had infiltrated deeper than she expected, and Eir found herself repeatedly gasping in surprise as new objects appeared.
So this is why the war, which should have ended quickly, has dragged on for so long. Eir had never once thought that the witches would win this war, but looking around this room now, she kept thinking, ‘What if?’
How many witches had been sacrificed to obtain these things? Their obsession, their reckless desire for revenge seemed to be smeared everywhere.
Eir put back what she was holding and turned her head.
‘I can’t leave the divine treasure here, whatever else happens.’
Determination showed on her face.
She could already see the mirror gradually becoming corrupted by darkness. If left here, there was no telling what dangerous things they might do with a corrupted mirror.
For now, she wasn’t quite sure what power a corrupted mirror held, but what was certain was that places with corrupted mirrors had more diverse and dangerous magical beasts.
Fortunately, it was just one of the smaller fragments, so if she handled it well, she might be able to take it away without being discovered.
Eir safely encircled it with divine energy, then tore off a curtain to wrap it thoroughly and hoisted it onto her shoulder. Still, she had no idea what to do about the faint light that was leaking out. Would they just think it was moonlight if she walked quickly enough?
Eir thought about escaping as quickly as possible and opened the door to leave. As soon as she opened the door handle and went out, Blackie, who had been hiding in the darkness, immediately raised its head.
“You were alive!”
It seemed the little shadow had temporarily fled due to the sacred power emitted by the mirror.
When Eir reached out her hand, the small darkness crawled up and quickly hid between the folds of her clothes. Feeling tickled, Eir shuddered and then gently tapped the spot where Blackie had merged with her shadow before hurrying away.
She had been walking for a while when suddenly Blackie popped its head up, emerged, and then tried to slither away somewhere else. It was heading beyond the corner to the left. Eir instinctively realized that other witches must be there and quickly pressed her back against the wall to hide.
Sure enough, shortly after, two witches could be seen approaching with a small light.
Eir held her breath and waited for them to pass by. Fortunately, they either didn’t notice Eir’s presence or chose to ignore it, as they slid away silently, looking straight ahead.
‘If Blackie hadn’t warned me, I would have been caught for sure. How can they walk so silently?’
Eir exhaled in relief and released the tension in her shoulders. But right at that moment, someone grabbed her arm and turned her around.
