Chapter 112
“…”
Though not explicitly said, Carter knew whom Richard referred to and felt no need to ask.
The Emperor wasn’t truly praying, but watching Richard cautiously.
“So, is that child growing well?”
“Didn’t you see him at the banquet? I believe you even greeted him personally.”
“Hem, cough.”
The Emperor grumbled as Richard chastised him, clearing his throat a few times.
“Suddenly married, and then brought a string of other men along. Who would’ve thought?”
“…He got involved with a strange woman like this… Why does royal blood act like a lover?”
Richard said nothing, calmly watching and silently telling him to pray.
After all, the Emperor himself was eating the Empress’s food but was such a fool with a screw loose in his head who couldn’t keep it in his pants?
“If you don’t have the confidence to beat the Empress, then stay quiet… At least use contraception properly.”
But the Emperor was incompetent, his conscience as thin as his competence, and even bore some resentment toward the Empress. He secretly saved a bastard child from a woman and entrusted it to the ‘most trustworthy’ temple.
Without knowing it was part of someone else’s plan.
He never dreamed the woman had intentionally planted the child in the temple.
Richard bowed his head before the one he served. A bearer of divine power who appeared after a century, the temple’s most perfect masterpiece from head to toe.
One who carried royal blood and could become a ‘living god.’
“If you wait for the tide and Tristan can’t rise from his bed, then you will become crown prince.”
“Hmm.”
“So far, things have gone according to plan, Carter. How about your side?”
“First, I confirmed there is a wizard attached to the Schroder family.”
“As expected.”
Richard nodded lightly.
At some point, those with divine power in the temple sharply decreased. The temple’s status declined, completely changing from before.
And this timing coincided exactly with the Schroder family’s rise. It seemed the Schroders had used some scheme, though it was just suspicion.
While the temple and the Livingston family helplessly watched their power being stolen, they secretly began surveillance.
“It’s fortunate we secured Eugenie Norton. She’ll help if the Schroder family tries to interfere.”
“Indeed.”
“But I think you’ll need to try a bit harder, Carter.”
“…Try.”
Carter ran a hand down his neck. Try. Few had lived a life more fitting for that word than him.
“What more should I try here, Richard? I’ve been by that child’s side since I saw her potential, and now I’m even more closely tied to her.”
“Wasn’t it Wilberforce who first found Eugenie Norton on the hunting day?”
“…”
“Didn’t he say he would firmly claim her side? What if she awakens her full power and prioritizes others’ wishes over yours?”
Carter didn’t answer Richard’s pointed questions.
Though it was a better choice than Tristan dying now… he hadn’t expected her to squeeze her magic to the point of risking her life for Alfred Wilberforce.
He really hadn’t thought Eugenie Norton would go to such lengths for someone else.
“Alright, I’ll try a bit harder, Richard.”
“Yes, Carter.”
“But I don’t think Eugenie cared who found her first that day.”
“Why’s that?”
“…”
Carter didn’t answer. It was already sunrise, and it was time for him to leave.
“I’d better go. We have something urgent to do, all of us.”
“Where are you headed?”
“To Troys. I’ll notify you immediately if anything happens.”
“Yes, Carter.”
Leaving Richard behind, Carter exited the prayer room.
In response to Richard’s question about why it didn’t matter who found her first, Carter wanted to say this:
She doesn’t love anyone. No, she will be kept from loving anyone.
So it didn’t matter if Eugenie slept with other men. If that was how she replenished her magic, he was even willing to help.
And Carter didn’t love her either.
Not since the day he forcibly met her to use her when she was five.
