Chapter 15
Tears welled up in Margaret’s eyes. Her clasped hands trembled, and she finally slumped to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
“I’m sorry, My Lady, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry…….”
“…It’s alright. We’re both alive.”
She was genuinely okay. As long as they didn’t die, then it was fine.
Cecilia comforted Margaret, who was still shaking uncontrollably.
“This much can be resolved as self-defense. Remember the man we just saw? He’s the Holy Knight Lord Rogerick Montieux. If we tell him…….”
Thump!
At the sudden loud noise, Margaret stopped her sniffling. A spine-chilling silence fell. Thump, thump thump! The sound was coming from the lone shack standing there.
“…Wait here for a moment, Margaret.”
“My Lady! Don’t go!”
“It’ll be alright. It’ll only take a second.”
Cecilia walked toward the shack. The grass on the ground naturally muffled the sound of her shoe heels.
‘No… it can’t be, can it?’
An impossible, terrible thought kept surfacing.
Cecilia reassured herself and stealthily peeked through the crudely woven planks.
There were people inside. Kidnapped girls and boys.
Her heart plummeted.
Cecilia stepped away from the planks and looked back at the coachman, who was no longer breathing. Her face was severely twisted. Even her hands trembled.
‘Damn it, things are tangled up. Completely tangled!’
The reason for Cecilia’s family’s downfall in the original story. The incident that led to Cecilia being branded a witch.
It all began when Cecilia Cissil freed her family’s private army to rescue the kidnapped people. The victims were all girls and boys.
Just like this situation.
‘The original story isn’t supposed to start for another year! Why is this happening already!’
In other words, Cecilia was getting entangled in that terrible tragedy even before the original story began.
Behind it, there was surely someone of great power—a being who could crush a mere Viscounty like Cissil with a single finger.
Surely, the person behind this coachman was the same person.
“…My Lady?”
“Margaret.”
Coming to her senses, she realized she was backing away without meaning to. Cecilia urgently went to Margaret. The only thought she had was that she had to get out of here.
“Margaret, do you know how to drive a carriage?”
“A carriage? Yes, yes, I can.”
“Let’s take this and go to Violet House first. Quickly, we have to escape from here quickly.”
“Isn’t there someone in that house? We can’t just leave! The, the fact that I killed that man… I mean, this is self-defense, so we didn’t do anything wrong…!”
The fact that she killed the coachman wasn’t a big deal.
It wasn’t, until they found those people. But now, it was.
The moment it was revealed that there were kidnapping victims in this forest, the moment the fact that Cecilia killed the coachman spread and reached that bastard’s ears.
A tragedy could begin without any time to prepare.
“Margaret.”
Cecilia’s voice dropped low.
“I took the sin you would have committed instead of you, didn’t I?”
“Oh, My Lady…….”
Margaret, who was on the verge of crying, bit her lip.
“What happened here today must be a secret between you and me. The price for this is to keep this secret. Do you understand?”
“……I-I understand.”
Margaret barely managed to get up. Cecilia tightly gripped the hair pin and looked back at the crime scene.
This was not enough. She hadn’t hidden the body, and if Rogerick happened to be on patrol and found this man, he would realize that Cecilia was involved.
‘Then rumors will spread in an instant.’
At the very least, she had to make sure Holy Knights other than Rogerick Montieux found the body.
“Margaret.”
Cecilia, who had pulled up her hood, approached Margaret, who was flustered and climbing into the driver’s seat.
“There’s a family leaving tomorrow among the staff you befriended yesterday, right? The moment we get back, meet them and tell them this.”
***
“Did he really do it with another woman? Rogerick Montieux?”
“I told you! There was no need to bring a woman. The moment I opened the door…….”
Holy Knight Jamie’s face turned beet red, as if he was recalling some scene. Pavel smiled faintly at him.
Rogerick Montieux was the very model of a Holy Knight from the textbook.
He was so pure and chaste, it was questionable whether he even had desires, let alone lust. Even when he was so annoyed that any other noble would fly into a rage and talk about blasphemy against nobles, he wouldn’t even retaliate.
That seemed like the arrogance of someone who had grown up with no lack of anything, and it made them sick to their stomachs. That was why they had tried to get him dead drunk and send a woman into his room. They had intended to find a woman who most resembled the person Rogerick had mentioned from his past.
So, it was a good thing that he had managed to get the job done on his own. Now Rogerick was a man of their kind.
But for some reason, Pavel felt a bit uneasy.
