Chapter 115
“Brother? I don’t have a younger sibling like you……!”
“I’ve heard everything you’ve been saying since earlier. I believe in what you said, Brother. It must be truly upsetting for you.”
The man, who had initially recoiled in alarm, blinked at Reno’s sympathetic words. Realizing the situation, his wary expression softened slightly.
“Do you really believe me?”
“Of course. Why would someone bring their family into a lie like that?”
“Exactly. You get it……!”
“I’d like to hear more about your circumstances. How about a drink? My treat.”
“A drink? That sounds great! Absolutely great!”
The man grinned broadly and stood shoulder to shoulder with Reno as if they were old friends.
Reno then asked the man if he had a favorite tavern, suggesting they head there together.
‘He’s doing better than I expected.’
I watched Reno as he casually conversed with the man and couldn’t help but be impressed.
Gaining his trust by claiming to believe him, breaking down his guard, and getting closer to learn his story—
This was what I had intended to do myself.
It was also why I could never entrust this to Isaac. But even if I had handled it, I doubt I could’ve done it this well.
‘Good thing I left it to him.’
Isaac and I followed at a short distance behind Reno and the man. Their conversation was relayed to us by Isaac, who could hear them clearly.
On the other hand, when I needed to pass a message to Reno, the spirits would deliver it. Although they weren’t visible to me since they weren’t materialized, I was told that simply speaking aloud would suffice for them to convey my words.
Just as Reno and the man reached the tavern, I was about to follow them inside when Isaac spoke cautiously.
“Will you be entering as well?”
“Hm? Why?”
“Crowded and confined spaces can make it difficult to respond to unexpected situations. I’m concerned about your safety.”
“I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.”
“This is just a precaution. Especially since it’s a tavern, there may be those who have lost their senses due to alcohol.”
“That’s true, but…… waiting outside might seem strange too.”
At my response, Isaac simply replied, “If that is your decision.” His tone was much softer compared to earlier.
We found a table not far from Reno and the man, though we maintained a bit of distance. Despite the sun still being up, the tavern was lively and bustling with people.
‘It’d be weird not to order anything, and it’d feel rude to the establishment too…….’
On the walls of the tavern were large illustrations of various dishes, with small text beneath them. Thanks to that, I could easily figure out the menu.
“Isaac, is there anything you’d like to eat?”
“I’m fine with anything.”
A familiar answer. Right, the last time I asked, he said he didn’t have any particular likes or dislikes.
Looking at the man who always remained calm and composed, I couldn’t help but feel a mischievous urge.
‘Would he eat something awful without complaint?’
Briefly entertaining the thought, I imagined Isaac eating even the most unpalatable or sour dishes without showing any reaction.
But in the end, it would be my loss too—I’d have to eat the same thing.
Suppressing the fleeting mischievous thought, I decided to order something I wanted. Since it was a tavern, I’d get some alcohol and simple skewers as snacks.
As I was about to call the server, I paused.
“Um, Isaac?”
“Yes, Your Highness?”
“Do you…… have money?”
Asking this made my face heat up a little. I rarely went out to eat, so I never thought about bringing money. The last time I had bought fruit, Reno had already paid, so I hadn’t needed to think about it.
“I always carry some spare cash. Don’t worry.”
Ah, thank goodness.
“I’ll pay you back when we return.”
“It’s just a small amount, there’s no need to.”
Is that so…….
I gave a sheepish smile, feeling relieved, and placed the order with the server. The alcohol came out first—an oak mug filled with golden liquid topped with a familiar white foam.
‘How long has it been since I last drank?’
I wasn’t particularly fond of alcohol, but seeing it after so long made me eager to try it. Picking up the mug, I took a sip.
“Drink slowly. It’s surprisingly strong.”
“I won’t get drunk that easily. Anyway, can you hear what Reno’s talking about?”
“Yes. They’re discussing scars right now.”
“Scars……?”
