Chapter 170
Aside from those bizarre incidents, Cynthia had been enjoying a peace she had never known before these days.
Once she soothed her husband, who was pretending to be frail, and coaxed him out of the room, the creature servants of the ducal residence would lift the petals or tentacles on their faces high and welcome them.
She ate breakfast, carefully prepared by the Butcher Cook brothers, while sitting on Segleninde’s lap as always, and afterward, they briefly strolled through the duke’s garden. The gardener creatures watching the affectionate ducal couple smiled as they trimmed the garden trees with the shears attached to both arms.
During their walk, the two talked about the day’s schedule and sometimes bickered for no particular reason. Even so, on the fingers the couple kept tightly clasped together were their wedding rings, along with rings set with gemstones modeled after each other’s eye color, which were said to be popular in the capital lately.
Melissa was deeply proud as she watched the two of them look more and more like a proper married couple with each passing day.
When Cynthia led her husband back into the mansion, while he mumbled nonsense about being no different from a pitiful, fragile sapling that couldn’t move a single step without her by his side, the servants who had prepared everything so he could handle the day’s work were waiting.
Cynthia kicked Segleninde’s shin as he wept, asking why on earth he had to hold a hard, cold pen instead of the hand of his delicate wife, who was like a tender leaf. When she threatened that if he kept spouting any more nonsense, he would only get one kiss today, he reluctantly headed toward the office with dragging steps.
‘Should I tell Mother and Father to hold back a little whenever we visit?’
Remembering Segleninde holding out that large, thick hand while saying something about tender leaves, Cynthia let out a sigh.
These days, his pretending to be weak seemed to grow worse with each passing day. Perhaps he truly believed himself to be a fragile being. Thinking of Segleninde doing something so ridiculous despite being quite muscular and nearly two meters tall, she felt a sigh and laughter rise at the same time.
He was shameless, alright, but because he was her husband, he was also cute.
“Let’s see, what did I have to do again?”
Left alone, Cynthia also began looking for her own work. It was time to handle her duties as the lady of House Wincastle.
In truth, Segleninde did not want her to work.
It wasn’t a problem born from old-fashioned thinking. He believed that all difficult, tiresome, and bothersome work ought to be handled entirely by him, and in the meantime, Cynthia should spend the whole day seeing only beautiful, pretty, fragrant things, smiling and living happily in the softest and coziest place. He also thought that was only natural and could not understand at all why it should not be that way.
But Cynthia wanted to do something too. At first, she had thought that life as an unemployed person suited her constitution, but after marrying Segleninde, doing nothing made her body itch with restlessness.
Therefore, lately, she had been trying her hand at various tasks.
First was household management. She checked the ledgers to see where and how money was being spent, and allocated proper budgets to places that needed more. She struggled for a while with the financial management part because it required training, but fortunately, her mother explained it to her in detail through letters, so she picked it up quickly.
Next, she checked invitations from several noble families and selected the places they would visit later. After the Duke and Duchess were married, more people became interested in them and sent invitations, so they decided to hold a banquet soon. Of course, it would be a peaceful and ordinary banquet, not a banquet of death.
She bought necessary items, checked the remaining ingredients, looked over the new human servants they had decided to hire, and prepared to repair part of a damaged dam. While out inspecting the territory, she also took note of shops that seemed good to invest in.
