When she arrived upstairs, a dark corridor stretched before her eyes.

The candles lined up on both sides of the walls dimly opened up her surroundings, but she could not see all the way to the far end. Just in case, Cynthia checked the floor. There were no tiles of a different color, no cracks, and not even a suspicious liquid pooled anywhere.

But the traps in this mansion were not always kind enough to be visible to the eye. Unable to cast off her suspicions, she picked up one of the candlesticks attached to the wall, pulled out a candle from it, and threw it forward.

Thud, rooooollll.

“……”

She watched tensely, but no change occurred.

She threw another candle next, then even threw the entire candlestick, but the floor remained quiet. It did not suddenly open wide for something to leap out, nor did any weapons fall. Only the two candle flames that had been gently swaying went out, making her field of vision slightly darker.

“…Is it safe?”

Cynthia craned her neck and narrowed her eyes fully as she looked across to the dark other side. In cases like this, usually things went well until the light disappeared completely and it turned pitch-black, at which point some problem occurred, but when she actually tried to prepare for it, no particular method came to mind.

So, with no other choice, she pulled out the candlestick fixed to the opposite wall and held it as a weapon. The two candle flames fixed at the end of the candlestick flickered, and Cynthia stepped one bare foot forward with a tense face.

However.

“Huh?”

Squish.

What touched the sole of her foot was not the hard floor, but something soft like a living creature.

The moment she recognized that fact, the pile of tentacles spread out while pretending to be the corridor floor rose with a rustle and wrapped around Cynthia all at once.

“AAACK!”

Vine tentacles resembling plant stems wrapped around her two legs, arms, and waist. She could feel that they were behaving as carefully as possible, worried that applying too much force might hurt her, but the startled Cynthia had no room to pay attention to such a thing.

She struggled desperately and swung the candlestick in her hand at random. When the sparks that flew about busily touched the vine tentacles, the tentacles flinched a little, and realizing that the tentacles binding her body had weakened a little more, Cynthia quickly shook them off, escaped, and threw herself forward.

After hurling the whole candlestick into the pile of vine tentacles, she ran blindly. To think that an attack using fire would work just because they looked like plants. She had never imagined it.

In truth, Segleninde had simply hurriedly let her go because he was worried she might get hurt if he kept holding on while she resisted that ferociously.

Bang!

“Huu, huuuu…”

Cynthia urgently opened the door to any room that came into view and entered, then quickly closed the door in case the tentacles chased after her. Standing with her back against the door, she panted and examined the interior while clutching closed the robe that had come undone enough to show all of her chest.

‘…Was there some kind of trap here too?’

There was nothing visible right away. Whether it did not even have a lamp, let alone a window, the inside was simply far too dark.

At least she could not hear the tentacle monster chasing her from beyond the door. Had she shaken it off well? Feeling a little relieved, she slowly took her back off the door and began carefully examining the dark room.

Once her eyes adjusted to the darkness a little, she could see the general shapes of objects.

A long table and sofa, a large bed, a fireplace. Aside from those, it was an empty space. In truth, until a moment ago, there had been a small flowerpot placed in a corner her sight could not reach, but a tentacle that silently rose from the corner smoothly wrapped around it and disappeared with it.

But, at that moment.

Thud.

“W-What was that.”

Surprised by the sound of something falling behind her, she turned around and saw that the candlestick she had thrown at the tentacles outside earlier was lying neatly there.

When she carefully approached and picked it up, flames lit by themselves on the wicks of the two candles fixed into the candlestick. Because of that, the dark room grew dimly bright.

And on the nearby wall, now brightly colored by the flames, letters made of shadow were carved.

Hello, Cynthia
