Chapter 216
“Did you miss me a lot?”
“Even in my dream.”
Herix quickly spoke, almost as if he couldn’t hold it in.
“I don’t care if it’s a fake, or if it’s something created… I just wanted to see you, even if it was just once, in a dream.”
He missed her so, so much. His whispering voice was sweet. Ivonne knew where this sweetness stemmed from.
It was from the loneliness he had endured during the time he couldn’t die. Yet, despite this, she couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of happiness rising in her chest, knowing that even now, he still whispered his love to her. He was still lovable, as always.
Herix continued.
“But Ivonne didn’t show up in my dreams much. It was upsetting…”
The strength in his arms tightening around her grew. Herix held her so tightly that the bruises on her body cried out, but she held him back just as firmly with her aching body. After savoring the feeling of skin against skin for a while, Herix slowly spoke again.
“…And then I realized. I shouldn’t do anything.”
The heavy breath he exhaled fell on Ivonne’s ear and shoulder.
“If even a little bit of the past changes, it could affect the future… and I thought it might interfere with you coming back. If I… didn’t kill Aiden, if I didn’t let the Emperor use me like a beast…”
So, Herix had repeatedly subjected himself to that horrific life. Ivonne could only feel sorrow and pain from hearing about those lonely times.
He had purposely let himself be attacked by situations where, even with his eyes closed, he could avoid the blows. He had nearly died several times, only to begin again from the start when his plan failed.
In the end, the only thing he wanted was to see Ivonne again, to believe that she would return.
‘With no straws to grasp… just believing in the words I spoke…’
The happiness that had once filled her chest suddenly drained away, replaced by guilt and sorrow. What should she do with this lovable and pitiful man? No matter how much of a god she was, she couldn’t change the feelings that had already been felt through the passage of time, and in that moment, Ivonne felt powerless, despite being a god.
It was this very powerlessness that stemmed from her deep love for Herix.
“I’ve come, Herix.”
So, the comfort Ivonne offered was just a whisper.
“To keep my promise, to meet you.”
She tightened her arms around him. Her sore muscles pulled tightly, and though the pain was intense, Ivonne held Herix tightly. She hoped that even if this embrace couldn’t soothe the pain of his past, at least this feeling would reach him.
Ivonne’s embrace—her embrace with all her strength—was like a reward to him. Herix suddenly burst into a laugh that sounded like crying.
“But I really waited so long… it’s just too much.”
For the first time, resentment poured out of him.
“Too… too short.”
The tears, hidden behind the laughter, grew even deeper. The sorrow that he had tried to hold back, forcing himself not to speak, finally spilled out.
“Now… now you’re going to leave again, aren’t you?”
“…”
“Everything… has to be set right, so… to do that… to do that, you…”
Every place where Herix nuzzled his face against her caused his tears to spread. After regressing countless times, using the power he had gained by killing Ivonne, he had protected and helped this world, and he had reached one conclusion.
It was simple.
“I have to disappear.”
In order to untangle this tangled mess caused by god’s intervention, the world needed to be turned back to the beginning. Therefore, the situation where god intervened must be erased.
In other words…
“The world must start again….from the very beginning. so that there will be no trace of you having intervened. Even I will forget you!”
In essence, he was speaking of Ivonne’s disappearance.
Herix burst into tears. His sobbing became louder, a cry that was unlike any he had shed before, it was almost like a scream. He cried even harder than when Ivonne had asked him to take her life.
Gasping for air, he didn’t stop calling Ivonne’s name. His cries, filled with so much pain, made Ivonne weep as well.
“I’m sorry.”
Her whisper was soaked, and it was impossible to tell who had started crying first.
“I’m so sorry for it turning out like this.”
Herix shook his head, putting more force into his arms around Ivonne. He instinctively knew that it was time for Ivonne to leave. He didn’t want to let her go.
“Don’t go.”
Please stay by my side. I can regress again. So just stay here, please. You don’t have to set everything right. Who is this for? Don’t go, please. Every word spoken between his sobs was his true feeling, the childish sincerity he had been holding back.
Understanding that, Ivonne’s heart broke, as if it was being torn apart. She couldn’t bring herself to step away from this lovable and pitiful man.
She would turn back dozens of times, hesitate hundreds of times, regret thousands of times. Yet, no matter how many times she tried, Ivonne would always arrive at the same conclusion.
“I love you. Truly.”
That was the last thing she said.
Herix.
He embraced the empty air.
“Ah… Ahhh!”
A scream-like cry echoed through the corridor.
‘I was going to scold him for the way he treated Berthe and Amelin.’
She had forgotten. Even if she had remembered, she wouldn’t have been able to scold him. In such a fleeting moment, when they were too busy cherishing and loving each other, there had been no time for anything else.
When Ivonne closed her eyes and opened them again, she found herself in the regenerated abode of spring.
