Chapter 35
Chapter 4 – The Emperor’s Rut
The air in the room, thick with Edin’s pheromones, was almost suffocating. Zerga knew, by the sheer intensity, that the emperor’s rut cycle was imminent.
“Shouldn’t we summon the Empress now?” he ventured cautiously.
“Do what you must,” Edin snapped back, irritable.
“Where will you stay during your rut? In your chambers…?”
“I’d never let that woman into my bed.”
Edin’s brow furrowed, displeasure etched on his face.
“Then I’ll have another room prepared.”
Edin sighed, a sound heavy enough to crack the floor. Zerga stopped writing and looked up at him. “It’s not like you’re going to your execution. You won’t even remember it afterward, so why the long face?”
“It irritates me not knowing what my body, the one I won’t even remember, will do to her,” Edin grumbled.
“Isn’t that a good thing?”
“What?”
“As you said, you won’t remember. You took the suppressant, so even if there’s knotting, she won’t conceive. And you’re taking the l*bido suppressant too, right? So even if you lose your memory, you won’t go completely wild.”
“You didn’t get that from Boute, did you?”
“No. I procured it myself.”
“Good. That man has been acting strange lately.”
Zerga nodded. “I’ve noticed him meeting with the Empress’s people frequently.”
“I don’t doubt his loyalty, but it’s best to be cautious.”
“And yet, you trust me so blindly?”
Edin scoffed. “You’re different. You’re my friend.”
“And what makes you think a friend can’t betray you?”
“Unlike that Theor bastard, you wouldn’t,” Edin retorted.
“That blind trust is going to be your downfall.”
“Alright, alright, enough nagging,” Edin said, leaning his head back against the chair. He let out another long sigh. “I miss Sei.”
“Your Majesty, please maintain some decorum.”
“Is my Sei doing well?”
“It’s only been a day since she went to the Rose Palace, Your Majesty.”
“That day feels like a year. I want to bring her back. Is there a potion to shorten a rut?”
“Boute has told you repeatedly that you shouldn’t overuse those potions. Have you not been listening?”
“Damn that late Empress and her dying wish…”
“Actually…” Zerga paused, a thoughtful look on his face. Edin looked at him quizzically. Then, with a serious expression, Zerga asked, “Nyxna doesn’t know you’re spending your rut with the Empress, but she’ll find out eventually, won’t she?”
Edin remained silent.
“This is practically the Empress’s wedding night. Her people won’t keep quiet. They’ll spread rumors about her possibly carrying the imperial heir. Even if you try to contain it, the rumors will reach her.”
Edin’s face grew grave. He had sent Lysei away to avoid a momentary crisis, but she would inevitably hear about his night with the Empress within the gossiping walls of the palace.
Should he tell her the truth now? Or should he wait until the rumors reached her and then reveal everything? Edin was once again lost in thought.
***
An alpha’s rut cycle could last anywhere from a day to a week. Edin, an ultra-dominant alpha, had longer and more intense cycles than most.
Until now, he had managed to suppress them with inhibitors. Now that he could no longer delay the inevitable, he had no idea whether this rut would last a week or even longer.
As his rut began, Edin walked towards the room Zerga had prepared, stewing in his resentment. He loathed the Marquis, who had conspired with the late Empress to kill his mother.
And he loathed the current Empress, who, fully aware of the Marquis’s treachery, had the audacity to demand her conjugal rights.
The thought of being intimate with her disgusted him, but despite his revulsion, his body was already burning with desire. His pheromones, potent and overwhelming, filled the air.
He swallowed the l*bido suppressant he’d kept on hand, just in case. He knew he’d lose control once they began, and he hoped the suppressant would at least prevent him from going completely wild, even in his lost state. Even better if it rendered him completely impotent.
Despite the suppressant, desire surged through him. He stumbled towards the room where Empress Raz was waiting. As he approached, Lysei’s face inexplicably flashed in his mind, and a sharp, aching throb pulsed between his legs.
