For a moment, Edith thought she’d misheard. But the three syllables were unmistakable. With a ‘no way’ expression, she turned to look back at the Duke, still on his horse behind her.
[Young Duke, Mikael Blackford, Age 22]
Now, without any hidden information, a complete status window appeared clearly above his head.
‘But… in the original, he was never this kind…’
The fact that the angelic Duke was the cruel sadist Young Duke was impossible to accept.
“We’ve met a few times… More importantly, it seems Your Highness was having an important conversation with the Saintess. My apologies for the intrusion.”
The Young Duke, looking down from his horse with a smile that seemed to enjoy her dazed expression, turned his gaze back to the Crown Prince.
“It’s fine. It wasn’t that important. But Mikael, were you with Lady Moulton when she entered the forest earlier?”
“Yes. Just before the start, the lady said she had something to give to the Saintess, so I accompanied her.”
For some ulterior motive, he was lying, contradicting her earlier excuse. Meeting his eyes, Edith felt this situation was so nonsensical she could almost believe he was toying with her.
She realized the story was flowing in a direction completely different from the original she knew at the start. It was a truth she could no longer ignore.
As their gazes converged on her at the Young Duke’s words, Edith flusteredly pretended to fumble through her pockets, then smoothly acted as if she’d forgotten.
“I must have forgotten it earlier. Nothing to be done. Haha, ha…”
Only Edith stood there, laughing awkwardly in the midst of it all.
“…I didn’t come out to hunt, and I’ve seen the Saintess now. May I return?”
Wanting to escape this dizzying situation quickly, Edith attempted a retreat.
Looking at her, the Crown Prince proposed,
“We’ve hunted enough, we may as well return.”
The Young Duke also took out his pocket watch, checked it, and nodded.
In the end, with everyone returning together, Edith had no choice but to ride with the Young Duke again. But unlike before, she could feel no thrill from that solid body.
Instead, feeling like prey placed before a predator, she stiffly straightened her back to avoid pressing against him.
Mikael clearly felt her changed attitude but didn’t seem to mind at all in the slightest.
Leaving behind the knights who had belatedly arrived and attendants who seemed to have come to tally the game, they returned to the clearing that had marked the Hunt’s start.
In the clearing, men presented the beasts they’d caught to the young ladies as courtship, and attendants tallied the game on one side.
Upon returning to the tea table with Serenity, the young ladies saw the blood on Edith’s dress and began shrieking.
Edith, with no energy to care about such things, sat down wearily in a chair.
Serenity, noticing her expression, seemed to want to do something, but Edith, still reeling from the earlier shock, couldn’t even muster the energy for her.
Not long after, the body of the beheaded black bear Mikael had caught was brought in on a cart by attendants.
“Oh my, who on earth could have caught such a large bear?”
“Naturally~ it must be His Highness the Crown Prince, right?”
The nobles began speculating about who the largest piece of game currently being tallied belonged to.
“I wondered where the game I was chasing had gone. It seems you caught it, Mikael. A bit of a pity.”
Everyone had assumed it was the Crown Prince’s game and pricked up their ears at his words, but when he unexpectedly attributed it to the Young Duke, all eyes turned sideways.
“As expected of the Young Duke…”
“I wonder who he will give that game to.”
Many noblewomen and young ladies hid their faces behind fans, curious about whom the handsome Young Duke, second only to the imperial family in rank, would present his game to.
As if responding to their expectations, Mikael stepped toward the area with the tea tables. Step by step, his path led him to Edith Moulton, notorious as the gloomy young lady.
While everyone thought ‘surely not,’ Mikael knelt on one knee before Edith, extending his hand to her and speaking.
“To the beautiful Lady Moulton, I present this game.”
“Oh my…”
The noblewomen fanned themselves, letting out admiring sighs tinged with envy at the overly romantic gesture. A few young ladies who had harbored feelings for him even clutched their foreheads and fainted at the fact that she—a girl they hadn’t even considered a rival or a minor threat—was the recipient.
As for the person in question, Edith only felt a sharper throb in her already aching head.
Forcing a smile and offering her thanks, her expression seemed to amuse Mikael, who looked as if he were holding back laughter.
‘I don’t want to attract any more attention from anyone…!’
But then, even the famously stone-faced Knight Commander Carlton, his face slightly flushed with shyness, presented his catches to her. This time, a different set of young ladies fainted amidst their gasps of admiration.
