Contrary to Edith’s wishes, unwanted attention converged upon her.
The tally concluded, and the Emperor, receiving the results, stroked his beard with apparent interest at the unexpected outcome, then announced the results in a dignified voice.
“Ohoho! The winner of this Hunt, for catching the largest game—one black bear, three wolves, a fox… and so on—is Lady Edith of Viscountcy Moulton!”
Congratulations and applause poured toward Edith. Nobles who didn’t know her looked around, searching for the protagonist.
“Congratulations, my lady. The goddess, too, will surely bestow abundant blessings upon this autumn in recognition of your sincerity.”
Following this, the Emperor, perhaps bored from sitting through the evening, advised everyone to enjoy the upcoming banquet after their hard work, then departed with the Empress.
Under everyone’s gaze, Edith wanted nothing more than to go home, victory and banquet be damned.
But the Hunt’s banquet was to celebrate the winner and honor those who had worked hard. As the winner, she had no choice but to attend, crying internally.
Led by palace maids, she changed out of the bloodied dress and was made up anew. She then headed to the banquet hall with Serenity, who was waiting for her.
Thanks to the large game, she had won, but Serenity had also received many offerings from nobles befitting her fame as the Saintess.
She congratulated Edith with a bright smile.
“From the Young Duke, and even the Knight Commander! Edith, you really are popular, aren’t you?”
‘Really…?’
Edith waved her hands dismissively at Serenity’s incomprehensible words.
The last person she wanted to meet was now entangled with her.
She had thought the angelic Duke was a direct or collateral relative of that Mikael, the Young Duke. The fact that he was the man himself made her feel deceived, and her mood sank further into the abyss.
What was most suspicious was that he, who in the game had only ever shown a cold, cruel side to Serenity, showed nothing but a harmless side to her.
She didn’t know why that devil had approached her wearing an angel’s mask, but the fact remained: there were no more male leads who weren’t entangled with her, a mere side character.
As she’d thought earlier, the game she existed in now was flowing in a story completely different from the original.
The overall events and story were the same, but the targets had changed.
‘I can’t just ignore this any longer. It’s clear everything from the original is now targeting me…’
This game had already shifted its direction and was charging at her threateningly.
‘It’s certain. No matter how hard I struggle, this game is targeting me. It’s obvious the situation will inevitably entangle them all with me.’
The problem was she had absolutely no idea why it was her, or what would change if they became entangled with her. It was frustrating.
Suddenly, she wondered if looking at the warning message again might reveal something. Focusing her consciousness on the status window, it appeared before her eyes.
[Status: Melancholy (48%)]
The most prominent number had already risen to that level.
Perhaps the earlier stress had a big impact. Alarmed by the precariously high value, Edith concentrated her mind to recall the status window to see the warning message again.
[Status Window]
[Edith Moulton, House Moulton, Age 20, Imperial Year 1000]
[Carlton Favorability 80% ▼]
[Her life has always been filled with misfortune. However, this misfortune will also end this year.]
[Help her survive this year and free her from her unhappiness.]
[Failure: Death]
[※Warning: Melancholy Level will have a significant impact.]
Reading the warning on the status window again—which she hadn’t looked at since first starting the game—didn’t answer her burning questions at all.
But then, something caught her eye.
‘That’s right… Favorability!’
Focusing a bit more on the ‘▼’ part, a scroll of favorability windows unfurled beneath it like a list.
[Carlton Favorability 80%]
[Kaidros Favorability 80%]
[Mikael Favorability 40%]
[Ellucian Favorability 50%]
In order: the Knight Commander, the Dragon, the Young Duke, the Crown Prince.
‘What are these numbers!’
Having seen Carlton and Kaidros act affectionately toward her, she had expected their favorability to be somewhat high. But she could never have imagined the Crown Prince’s favorability would be higher than the Young Duke’s.
It was utterly incomprehensible that someone who clearly disliked and tormented her could have a 50% rating.
‘Assuming the game recognizes me, not the Saintess, as the heroine…’
She searched for a way out of this situation.
‘Ah! Maybe at the autumn favorability branch point, I can choose one of the higher-rated Carlton or Kaidros routes…!’
Honestly, she preferred the two at the top over the two at the bottom.
Of course, if she entered a branch point, she didn’t know how their behavior would change. But considering they were already kinder than in the original, it didn’t seem like it would be too dangerous.
‘Then there might be hope…!’
