Chapter 58
Nita’s documents were processed without issue. After confirming that Nita’s name had been removed from the Grace family tree, Chase sent Anthony back to the North first and remained alone in the capital.
It was because the Imperial Crown Prince, Kyle, had sent an attendant after learning that he had come to the capital. Since he already had another appointment in the evening anyway, Chase did not refuse.
Kyle was curious about how the matter with Grace had been handled, and as they talked about this and that, time grew a bit late. By the time Chase left the Imperial Crown Prince’s palace, the sun was setting.
In the capital, he deliberately did not travel with his subordinates. There wasn’t really anything that posed a threat, and even if he brought them along, it would only draw attention, so it was better to move alone. That was also why he had only brought Anthony, who was skilled at handling documents, and sent him off quickly.
After mounting his horse, Chase pulled his mask up to just below his eyes as he exited the castle. His handsome face was hidden. Even so, with his broad shoulders, solid build, and refined uniform, he was more than enough to catch people’s attention.
Guiding his black horse leisurely, Chase arrived at the commercial district of the capital. He left his horse nearby and headed toward the clock tower. As he looked at the reddened sunset, Nita’s flushed face from that morning suddenly came to mind.
Chase let out a silent, breathy chuckle.
Was her mouth really that bitter, to rush in so frantically over just one piece of candy?
After hearing that the drink he had ordered a week ago had arrived at dawn, Chase postponed his training and had breakfast with Nita. Serving meat from the morning might have seemed excessive, but it was a necessary process. The drink Nita had to take put quite a burden on the stomach. With Nita’s usual diet of just salad and simple soup, her stomach might ache.
It was a drink made by grinding decades-aged medicinal herbs, rare mushrooms, and various special tonics together, something his father had always prepared for his mother.
An incredibly bitter nutritional drink. In truth, it would be a lie to say that Chase had never tasted it. When he was young, he had once tried it out of curiosity about what his mother drank.
It had such a terrible taste that it made him feel nauseous.
Even so, the reason he thought of it for Nita’s health was because, after his frail mother had taken it regularly, there had at least been a slight effect.
And his father had always kept candy prepared for his mother.
Today, Anthony happened to have some candy, so he gave her that, but what should he do next time? Imagining her reaction like this morning, he couldn’t stop himself from smiling.
Interesting.
As he walked while thinking that, a candy shop came into view. It was a large shop with a big candy model mounted on its sign. Naturally turning his gaze inside, he saw all kinds of candies beyond the glass window.
Chase, who had stopped walking, lifted his head and looked at the clock tower. The hands of the clock pointed to 5:20 in the afternoon.
The appointment is at 5:30. There was a bit of time left.
After hesitating for a moment, Chase turned his body and headed toward the candy shop.
Jingle
As he opened the wooden door with glass and stepped inside, a cheerful bell sound greeted him.
“Welcome!”
The owner of the handmade candy shop, wearing a white apron, greeted him warmly.
Chase lightly nodded in response and calmly looked around the shop.
“What would you like?”
“Do you have candy that isn’t too big in size?”
“What kind of flavor would you like?”
“Well. As long as it’s sweet.”
“Is it for a lady? Then how about this?”
The owner held out a glass jar filled with pink candies to Chase. He added that they were made by mixing strawberries and milk, making them very sweet and pretty in color, so women liked them. Though he thought such a detailed explanation wasn’t necessary, Chase still listened attentively.
“I’ll take that.”
“Yes. Just a moment. I’ll wrap it for you.”
“No. I’ll decline the wrapping.”
“Pardon? Isn’t it a gift?”
A gift? This?
He was just going to toss it to her to eat as a palate cleanser, so calling it a gift felt a bit much.
He hesitated. When he didn’t answer and simply stared at the wrapping paper, the owner seemed to think he had changed his mind and wrapped the outside of the glass jar with kraft paper before tying it tightly with a ribbon.
After purchasing the large glass jar of candy, big enough that he had to fully spread his large hand to hold it, Chase stepped outside and looked at the clock tower. Tucking the jar under his arm, he began walking again. After only a few steps, he came to an abrupt stop.
A flower shop had appeared before his eyes.
Chase’s brows furrowed.
