Chapter 59
The commercial district in the capital, considered one of the most prominent, was not a place he was visiting for the first time. This area alone had various restaurants and bakeries, but if one headed behind the clock tower, there were far more diverse shops lined up. If he continued along that road, he would reach the weapon shop he frequently dealt with.
Normally, Logan or his subordinates handled weapon maintenance, but every time he came to the capital, Chase would personally stop by the shop as well, so it was a street he knew well.
But has there ever been a flower shop here? Why was that thing only catching his eye today?
In truth, Chase had never intended to buy flowers for Nita. Not only had he never once given flowers to anyone, he also didn’t understand the idea that having flowers nearby could improve one’s mood.
‘I like them.’
But once again, Nita’s face came to mind. Not the sulky expression she had while drinking the bitter beverage, but the bright, innocent smile she had shown while saying she liked flowers.
Standing with the candy tucked under his arm, Chase shoved one hand into his pocket. Leaning slightly with his weight shifted, he quietly stared at the flower shop.
“Your Grace.”
At that moment, a man in a black robe approached and stood beside Chase. He was a subordinate he had arranged to meet. After hearing Nita’s words last time and deciding to accept her as a mage, Chase had immediately sent his subordinate to the capital to gather information…
“I will report on Michael Raymond.”
About that bastard stalker.
Chase gave a short nod. And just as the subordinate was about to speak, he asked something else.
“By the way, since when has that flower shop been there?”
“…Pardon?”
The subordinate’s gaze followed Chase’s toward the flower shop. Despite it being winter, it was a very large shop filled with all kinds of vibrant flowers.
“Ah, it’s always been there.”
Chase’s expression grew even more puzzled.
“Then why haven’t I seen it until now? It’s my first time noticing it.”
“It seems Your Grace simply had no interest in it. I’ve always seen it.”
“Is that so?”
So it had always been there, and he just hadn’t noticed. Then why was it standing out today of all days?
Tsk.
Clicking his tongue briefly, Chase strode straight into the flower shop. The subordinate, still bewildered, followed him inside.
“Welco-!”
The flower shop owner, who had been greeting them warmly, froze in alarm. It was only natural. Two men with physiques beyond merely sturdy, almost imposing like knights, had entered wearing masks that hid their faces.
On top of that, they were sweeping the shop with sharp gazes. The owner shrank back for a moment, but upon noticing the insignia on Chase’s uniform that signified a high-ranking noble, he forced a smile and spoke.
“W-What brings you here?”
Chase’s blue eyes swept over the flowers before settling on the owner.
“What kind of flowers do women like?”
“Most women tend to like bright and colorful flowers. Do you have a particular preference?”
“Not that far.”
“In that case… how about this? It’s simple, but the most popular, and everyone likes it.”
What the owner pointed to was a rose. But somehow, it looked a little different from the ordinary roses he knew. Roses bloomed in the North as well, but the ones here…
The leaves were clean, and even the thorns seemed neatly trimmed.
What’s different? Is it because it’s a flower shop?
“Are these always available?”
“Yes. We operate a large greenhouse in the South. Unless it’s a strictly seasonal flower, you can purchase most flowers all year round.”
“Then I’ll take those.”
After examining roses of various colors, Chase pointed to a blue rose.
“You’ve made an excellent choice! It’s a bit expensive, but the color is rare, so it’s very popular.”
The owner beamed at Chase, who had chosen the expensive roses.
“How many would you like?”
“Well. About this much?”
After some thought, Chase formed a large circle with one arm, big enough to fill his embrace. Seeing that, his subordinate’s eyes widened.
“Your Grace, isn’t that too many?”
“What do you mean too many? It’s not like I’m buying the entire shop.”
The owner quickly gathered a large bundle of blue roses.
“Thank you!”
After being told that the wrapping would take some time, the two finished the order and stepped outside, heading toward the back of the clock tower.
“Report.”
“Yes.”
In one of Chase’s hands, the glass jar of candy was still firmly held.
“Michael Raymond. A criminal who committed murder at the Mage Tower over a decade ago. According to his own claim, it was an experiment, but he committed the act of injecting mana into human bodies.”
“Injected mana into human bodies?”
“Yes. Fortunately, since it happened inside the Mage Tower, it was discovered quickly. The records say it was exposed in three days, and he fled the scene immediately. And in those three days, ten people died.”
“Ten in three days… And?”
“The method was extremely horrific.”
“Method?”
“Yes.”
