Chapter 63
As soon as the door opened, the absurd question made me chuckle in disbelief. Perhaps Ren felt similarly, as he sighed and responded with an air of disbelief.
“Why are you asking me about that?”
“I just thought you might have one. If not, I apologize.”
The man, with a mischievous smile, wasn’t very tall. Like Ren, he had silver hair, but his was more grayish, and he looked younger, almost like a boy.
However, when I noticed a familiar scar on the back of his hand as he gripped the door, I realized he was the investigator who had been having s*x in the other room earlier.
I was stunned by the realization. The window in the interrogation room was so small that I hadn’t seen his face earlier, but I couldn’t believe his appearance!
He was the one who had done that… with such a soft, childlike face? To do something so embarrassing in broad daylight with a face like that? He was an adult, but it just didn’t seem to match at all!
“By the way, Senior.”
His smile turned more mischievous, like a little troublemaker.
“I think you’ve done it again. No matter what, it’s still a lady after all.”
“Crudi.”
Ren replied with an entirely formal tone, not even bothering to look at him.
“Cut the nonsense, and if you’re done with the treatment, get back to your duties.”
“Yes!”
It seemed like the cold treatment from his superior wasn’t anything new for the man, who answered cheerfully before turning his attention back to me. As he looked at me silently, he winked playfully and then spoke.
“Sister over there. If you ever get tangled up with a nightmare demon, don’t go to the temple. Come to me instead. I’ll take care of you.”
“……”
His ridiculous suggestion left me speechless. I couldn’t even laugh this time. I just stared blankly at him. Just as I was processing his words, Ren seemed to reach the limit of his patience and turned to glare at him coldly.
“Sir Crudi, leave. Now.”
“I’m going!”
The door slammed shut behind him as he left in a flurry, and the room fell into silence again. After the exhausting interrogation, my mind was already drained, and the visit from someone who seemed like a completely unhinged individual only made my head spin.
“Hold on.”
Just as I was about to stand up on my own, a hand suddenly reached out to me. The man, who had been pushing me so ruthlessly earlier, was now wearing an angelic smile again. He spoke gently.
“I’m sorry if I scared you. It’s just that with all the evil spirits around, the verification process is necessary.”
“……”
I glared at him silently, but instead of taking his hand, I pushed myself up from the floor. I still had my pride. I couldn’t accept help from the person who had just tortured me like that.
Now, I understand why this man had such a terrible reputation. He was violent even toward a noblewoman, former lover of royalty, and even a woman who might have connections to the crown prince. What about suspects of lower status? What would they endure?
He had even stored the instruments separately, ready to summon them, so what couldn’t he do? Now I understood why there was no need for torture devices. It’s because he’s the kind of man who can effectively torment someone even without them.
“That’s… unsettling.”
I spoke in a tone that was clearly angry, and I reacted in a way that any ordinary noblewoman, who had nothing to do with a possessor, would have.
“I thought I was here merely as a witness.”
“Officially, yes. There were some high-ranking individuals who didn’t want your summoning.”
High-ranking individuals.
Ren had just revealed that Wyner had opposed it, but was there someone else involved?
It was highly likely that it was the Crown Prince he had mentioned earlier. But why did the Crown Prince behave that way? Was it simply to fulfill his younger sibling’s wishes?
I sighed and adjusted my clothes.
Right, let’s think positively. Although it was a bit frightening, at least there was no grotesque scene of flesh flying or anything like that. Most importantly, the magic succeeded, which gave me the opportunity to firmly confirm that I was indeed Camilli Mute. That alone was a huge gain for me.
“I’m sure your doubts have been cleared, so let me be clear. I hope this never happens again.”
