“Let’s go and see.”
Seizing the opportunity, Ren immediately took charge of the situation and led me forward. The princess, who had been frowning due to the unexpected intrusion, reluctantly followed us.
The officer led us to a different elevator from the one I had arrived in. As we descended, we could hear the loud sounds of an argument before the elevator even came to a full stop.
“Anyone can tell this woman is a possessor, so why are you stopping me?”
“According to procedure, only investigators of rank 3 or higher can make a solitary decision. You need to wait for Sir Ren.”
“Oh, come on. I should’ve known you were the type to be so rigid after giving birth. You’ve lost all your sense, haven’t you?”
The door to the interrogation room was open, and the sound carried through the hallway due to the space’s structure. The words were pronounced so clearly, I could hear every unpleasant detail.
It seemed I wasn’t the only one in a foul mood, as Ren stepped forward without further hesitation.
“Enough. What do you think you’re doing in front of the investigator?”
The two parties in conflict were Dahlia and the female officer who had escorted me, as well as the male officer who had taken Dahlia to the interrogation room.
However, the male officer scowled and turned his head away the moment he saw Ren’s face. The explanation was left to the female officer.
“Sir Charlin was attempting to imprison Dahlia Mute without following procedure, so I was trying to stop him.”
“Sir Charlin, is what Dame Josephine said true?”
With a voice colder than usual, Charlin bowed his head and responded.
“After investigation, it’s clear Dahlia Mute is a possessed person.”
“Is that so? Even if that’s the case, it’s an abuse of power for you to make the decision to imprison her alone. Isn’t it?”
“…”
The silence was an implicit agreement, though his expression was filled with defiance. His fist was clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
I shifted my gaze to Dahlia, who seemed completely unconcerned, observing the whole situation as if it had nothing to do with her. Half-leaning on the interrogation room desk, she looked bored, puffing out her cheeks and then exhaling, repeating the process.
Somehow, seeing that made me feel relieved. I had worried that she might have been possessed by another spirit while in the interrogation room, but judging by her behavior, I could tell she was the Dahlia I knew.
“Sir Charlin.”
I called him calmly. I knew his temper had reached its limit, so I didn’t want to provoke him further.
“May I ask why you’ve determined Dahlia to be a possessed person?”
Although my words weren’t a direct criticism, he glared at me sharply before pointing an accusing finger at Dahlia. Without answering me, he turned to Ren and replied instead.
“She doesn’t know anything about Harent, this woman!”
“…”
Ah, I think I can guess the reason.
“No, she has absolutely no common sense! She doesn’t even know the sun rises in the east!”
I barely stopped myself from saying, ‘The sun rises in the east, even on Earth.’
So, this was it. Dahlia’s seriously innocent mind had caused this misunderstanding.
If she was an ordinary citizen, she’d probably know the basics of common knowledge, so it’s not entirely surprising that this misunderstanding occurred. I sighed and stepped forward.
“Um, officers. I’m not sure how to explain this, but… she’s always like this.”
“Always like this? What do you mean by that?”
“I mean, she’s seriously stupid.”
“Did you just call me stupid?”
Dahlia, who had been sitting quietly, suddenly stood up and shouted. I ignored her and continued speaking.
“She keeps failing her entrance exams and couldn’t even get into the academy. So, it’s hard to judge her by normal standards.”
“Hey! I admit I’ve been lazy with reading, but you don’t have to put it like that!”
I clicked my tongue as I watched Dahlia sulking with a pouty face. Didn’t she realize how scary the situation was?
