Chapter 62.1
A chuckle nearly escaped me at the mention of Vivian’s name from Hector’s lips. Despite all his excuses, she was clearly the reason for his visit. I met Hector’s gaze, lifting my chin, silently inviting him to explain himself. His brow furrowed, deepening the lines on his face.
“Yes, she came to see me.”
“…What did you talk about?”
“Didn’t she tell you everything?”
I crossed my arms, tilting my head with feigned bewilderment. “She did, but…”
Hector Acid hesitated, his words trailing off. With a deep frown, he lowered his gaze, lost in thought, likely replaying Vivian’s words in his mind. Finally, he slowly lifted his head, looking down at me.
“Vivian has been…unhappy lately.”
The words that followed Hector’s long silence were perplexing. What does her unhappiness have to do with me? I furrowed my brows just as he continued.
“I asked her what was wrong, but she wouldn’t tell me. She’s been more than just unhappy; she’s been crying every night.”
“What are you trying to say?”
“Vivian…”
“….”
“I only found out she’d been like this since visiting you.”
Hector spoke as if he hadn’t even known about our meeting from Vivian herself, as if he’d stumbled upon the information by chance. Vivian likely orchestrated it, ensuring Hector learned of our encounter. Was he truly this naive? So easily fooled by such an obvious ploy? Or perhaps, it meant he trusted Vivian Ewill implicitly, even in the face of such flimsy evidence.
“What did you talk about? What did you say to her? Surely, you didn’t threaten her…”
“Threaten?” I echoed the word involuntarily, a sardonic smile playing on my lips.
“Threaten? Are you suggesting I threatened her?”
“Amelia, I know you wouldn’t do such a thing. But…” Despite his words, suspicion lingered in his eyes. But you said you loved me. Therefore, I was capable of threatening Vivian Ewill. Amelia Hazel loved Hector Acid, so wouldn’t she threaten Vivian to avoid being jilted? That’s what his eyes seemed to ask. Honestly… This time, a scoff escaped me. Hector’s misconception was so transparent.
“How absurd.”
Any remaining sentiment vanished—not romantic feelings, but the gratitude I held for him, for his kindness to me and the Hazel family.
“Amelia?” Hector questioned, puzzled by my murmur. Looking up at him, I offered a sweet smile. “Threaten…” I couldn’t deny it entirely. I had told Amelia, when she demanded I break off the engagement, that I would, eventually, but she needed to be patient. Unless she wanted me to reveal the secret about the child, that is. Had Vivian Ewill not considered that Hector might hear about this and that I might expose her secret? Perhaps she believed she could wriggle out of it, lacking any concrete proof.
“Are you curious about what we discussed?”
“…Yes.”
I slowly curved my lips into a smile. “Because she’s been crying?”
“….”
“Believe it or not, I didn’t say anything.” Hector remained silent, his expression clearly disbelieving. He didn’t believe for a second that I hadn’t said anything to Vivian. As if just remembering, I added, “Oh, she did ask me to break off the engagement with you.”
“What?”
“She said it was something you should have done yourself, Hector.” My words caused Hector’s red eyes to flicker. He clearly hadn’t expected Vivian to say such a thing. Why did he even think Vivian came to see me in the first place? In his eyes, Vivian Ewill was infinitely fragile and kind, a delicate woman incapable of harsh words.
“So, I told her…”
“…What did you say?”
“To mind her own business.” I replied with a sweet smile. In reality, I had simply told her that those weren’t words she should be saying. His face hardened at my words.
“You said that to Vivian?”
“I also told her I couldn’t break off the engagement yet.” Hector’s mouth opened and closed, then he simply stared down at me, surprisingly not angered by my harsh words to Vivian.
“So that’s why she’s upset. Because you don’t want to break off the engagement.” Hector’s voice was low, and he almost seemed pleased. …Has he finally lost his mind? Or perhaps he was happy that Vivian was upset, taking it as a sign of her affection for him. There was no other reason to be pleased.
