Chapter 53
After much ado, Leila was finally examined by the doctor, wrapped in the blanket up to her neck with only one hand exposed outside. Holding her precariously revealed wrist, the doctor was carefully examining her condition.
“Hmm…”
Lucas knew that the doctor usually took only a few seconds to examine him. He found it suspicious that he was holding her wrist for so long.
Just as he was about to say something, the doctor released her wrist and spoke.
“The lady is generally in a weakened state.”
“Recently, she experienced a high fever during her heat cycle. It wasn’t severe, so I focused on treating the heat cycle and administered fever reducers. That might still be having an effect.”
The doctor nodded as he listened to Lucas’s explanation and then opened his mouth to speak.
“While the fever has subsided, as I mentioned, the lady’s overall health is not good. It is important to recover strength first…”
Leila had somewhat expected this. Since losing her sight, she hadn’t been eating properly and hadn’t grown as healthy as others might have.
Unlike her, who took it lightly, Lucas asked with a serious expression,
“Is there a more significant issue?”
The doctor pondered seriously before speaking.
“It’s not certain, so it would be better to recover her strength first and then have another check-up, but it seems there might be an issue with her pheromone glands.”
“…What?”
Leila asked in surprise at the doctor’s words. The doctor then proceeded to ask various questions.
“My lady, may I ask what is the frequency of your heat cycles?”
“…Um, they come once in summer and once in winter.”
“Has it always been like that since you first manifested?”
“Yes, it has.”
Leila couldn’t understand why the doctor was asking such questions, but Lucas seemed to understand and asked,
“Only twice a year?”
“…Yes.”
“That’s strange. I typically have them four times a year, and sometimes the cycle changes, making it six times. I heard it’s because I’m hyper-dominant, which makes my pheromone glands more active.”
Leila then realized that her heat cycle frequency was unusually low. Unable to say anything, she just moved her lips silently while the doctor spoke on her behalf.
“The pheromone glands of omegas and alphas are mysterious organs. There is still much that is not understood about them. So, rather than worrying too much, how about focusing on regaining your strength and aiming for better health first?”
The elderly doctor spoke kindly, as if to comfort her. Leila could only nod in response.
“Then, please prepare the medicine.”
“Yes, of course. But eating well is most important, so Your Grace, please make sure the lady eats properly.”
“Understood.”
She heard the sound of the doctor leaving, and the bed shook briefly. She realized that he had sat on the bed. At that moment, a large hand gently stroked her forehead.
Startled, Leila covered her forehead with her hand, and he spoke.
“You heard him, right? You need to eat well.”
“…Yes, I will.”
“You exerted yourself throughout the heat cycle, yet you’re not hungry? How is it that you never mentioned being hungry?”
“Uh…”
As she recalled his actions during the heat cycle, her face flushed. Lucas, looking down at her, spoke playfully.
“Well, I made sure to do most of the work, so you might not have been too exhausted.”
Leila couldn’t understand how he could say such embarrassing things so casually. What was even harder to understand was how he naturally touched her body.
Of course, she knew he had helped her a lot. But could one heat cycle together really bring them this close? Having never kept anyone close other than Anna, she bit her lower lip in confusion.
“Wait a moment.”
As he watched her quietly, he stood up at the noise coming from outside. The food he had requested was being set up in his room’s sitting area.
