“Just express your love a lot. More than you already do. So much that I can barely breathe.”

“With pleasure.”

Killian showered me with breathless kisses, then held me tightly as we lay down.

“Don’t worry. I’m here. Close your eyes.”

I followed his words, closed my eyes, and let go of all worries. His breath and heartbeat became my lullaby as I fell asleep.

“Ugh… Killian?”

When I opened my eyes again, he wasn’t there.

“Killian?”

I opened the door and called out, but there was no answer. The farmhouse was dark and silent, and I felt a sudden fear. Not wanting to be alone any longer, I hurried to the front door and grabbed the handle.

But I hadn’t lost my mind enough to rush outside without looking first, so I drew aside the heavy curtains at the window and looked out.

It was just past noon, and the yard’s shadows were short—no one was there. Not even anyone who should have been.

I quietly opened the door and stepped out into the yard.

“Killian?”

I peeked into the closest buildings and called softly, but still no reply. He was the kind of man who’d rush to me even if the door was closed and I called in a whisper.

‘Where could he have gone without saying a word? Could something bad have happened while I was sleeping?’

My legs trembled, and I couldn’t walk any further. I leaned against the barn wall, scanning around as I called him a few more times. Then, as I braced myself and passed in front of the barn, I heard the voice I’d been searching for inside.

“Dana, don’t bite the scabs.”

Pulling my finger out of my mouth, I turned to see him hanging wet laundry on a rope stretched across the barn.

“I’ll cut your nails later.”

Relief flooded me, but then anger bubbled up.

“You’re terrible.”

“Me?”

The clean chemise in his hand fell to the floor with a soft thud. No wonder—I thought “terrible” didn’t suit him at all.

“You heard me calling but didn’t answer on purpose, didn’t you?”

“If that’s what you’re saying, then I’m definitely a devil.”

Killian approached me with a shy smile as I pouted at him at the barn entrance. Did he really want to hear his name that badly?

He pressed his lips to mine and gently wiped away a tear that had formed at the corner of my eye while I wasn’t paying attention. He looked apologetic, yet so excited.

This man was just like me. I had to express my love to him a lot, a whole lot.

“Killian, my love.”

I wrapped my arms around his broad back from behind and rubbed my face into it. Even stretching my arms wide, it was hard to fully hug him. His chest was so broad.

“You’re terrible, you know…”

I pointed out how contradictory I was being, but my voice was full of joy.

“Dana, my love.”

Killian turned and pulled me into his arms. A sharp scent of soap rose from him. Though we were in a remote farmhouse and it was probably cheap soap, mixed with his scent it didn’t smell harsh at all—instead, it was like a perfume. It soothed me more than lavender ever did.

I let myself be spoiled without worry.

“When I woke up and you weren’t here, do you know how scared I was? If you did that on purpose, you’re really terrible.”

Even though he must have left me alone to do the laundry. He seemed to enjoy my childishness instead of being troubled by it.

“Are you still hurting? The medicine should have worn off by now.”

“I feel better after sleeping.”

Actually, I hadn’t even had time to feel pain because I was so startled.

“You’re not hurting, but you must be hungry. Let’s go eat lunch.”

We linked arms and walked side by side toward the farmhouse. I went in first, and he was supposed to follow, but I didn’t hear his footsteps behind me.

When I turned around, Killian was staring toward the farm’s entrance.

“Why…?”

As soon as I looked that way, I understood why. Two men were running hastily down the dirt road, trying to escape. They looked like monks from their hairstyles and clothing.

One seemed familiar—the man who gave us a ride yesterday.

I sensed it instantly.

‘…We’ve been discovered.’
