“Is there really nothing wrong?”

I set my work aside and stepped out of the field, worried about you. You gave me an awkward smile and said something I couldn’t quite make sense of.

“I came because I was worried about you.”

“…Me?”

“Aren’t you tired?”

“No, I’m….”

Then you suddenly held out what you’d been clutching the whole time.

“Wipe the sweat.”

It was a handkerchief.

“I can just use my sleeve.”

There was no need to create extra laundry. So I declined and wiped my forehead with my sleeve, only to freeze when I looked at you again.

You were staring down at the handkerchief with slumped shoulders and downcast eyes.

‘…Don’t tell me.’

For a moment, an impossible suspicion crept into my mind. I told myself it was just another misunderstanding.

‘No. You probably just wanted to help.’

I brushed the thought aside and said something to lift your spirits.

“I’m thirsty. Could you bring me something to drink?”

“Of course!”

You broke into a bright smile and hurried off with light, eager steps. I tried to think of you as nothing more than a child, delighted simply to be able to help an adult.

“I brought milk, in case you were hungry too.”

You returned a moment later and handed me a glass of milk.

“Well? Is it good? I just milked it myself. I can do it on my own now. At first the cow scared me and it was hard, but once I got used to it, I figured it out.”

You chatted away like a little child while I drank. I thought you were just proud to finally be useful, to carry your own weight.

“That was good. Thank you for helping.”

I handed the glass back and went to wipe my mouth with my sleeve, then realized something was off.

You suddenly reached out and wiped my mouth with the handkerchief yourself, then turned away, too embarrassed to meet my eyes.

‘…Don’t tell me you like me?’

That absurd suspicion refused to leave my mind.

‘What did I do? I didn’t do anything. Then why?’

No matter how much I thought about it, I couldn’t understand why you would suddenly like me. Because I was your husband? Even now, I don’t know.

I’m telling you this because I want you to know. I never took advantage of you after you lost your memories.

I don’t know how it felt to you, but I swear before God that I never courted you, never tried to seduce you. From the moment I resolved to let go of my feelings, to the moment I realized you might like me, everything I did came from pure intentions alone.

That doesn’t mean what we eventually did—what we never should have done—was your fault for liking me innocently. It was my fault, for knowing everything and still failing to reject you completely.

That day, you didn’t notice how I froze in shock. You were staring at the ground the whole time.

“I gave you milk. What are you going to give me?”

You looked at me expectantly. My body and my mind had gone completely rigid, and I couldn’t grasp what you wanted.

‘Ah… I have nothing to give you but thanks….’

Like an idiot, I even patted my empty pockets.

‘I can’t even pick fruit for you….’

At a loss, I glanced around the field we were planting, and my eyes landed on the yellow daffodils blooming along the edge.

I picked a few and tucked them into the glass you were holding, thinking I’d handled the situation well. Looking back now, I can only laugh at how foolish I was.

You blinked at the flowers, then answered with a faint pout.

“Well… I guess this isn’t terrible.”

Which meant it was the wrong answer.

“Uh… then what did you want?”

Even then, I thought there was something you wanted to receive.

You didn’t answer. You pressed your lips together, as if holding back a smile. Then suddenly lift the empty glass to your mouth.

You placed your lips where mine had been.

Then, as if embarrassed, your face flushed red at once.

Only then did I understand what you wanted. The shock left me unable to do anything but breathe. When I stood there like a tree, unmoving, you glanced up at me, bit the rim of the glass with your teeth, and frowned.

“…Never mind.”

And just like that, you turned away sharply and left, sulking.

Only long after you were gone did I dare put words to what you had wanted.

‘…A kiss?’
