Chapter 208
Barony Shearton had long been loyal vassals to the Krygen house, so no matter what terrible things the Duke did behind the scenes, they were in no position to expose him.
So Anna decided to act on her own. She entered the Duke’s estate, saying she was summoned by Baron Shearton.
“Get her out!”
But she was caught by the guards before she could search properly. Anna was dragged out, her arms restrained by the guards so she dangled helplessly.
“I got lost for a moment! I swear! Please believe me! I’m the maid serving Baron Shearton!”
“How can we believe that? Just wait quietly until the Baron arrives!”
They ended up outside the front door. One guard went to call Duke Krygen and Baron Shearton, who were in the office.
‘At this rate, I’ll be kicked out without learning anything. If I don’t take this chance, I might be banned from entering forever!’
Growing desperate, Anna bit the hand of the guard holding her arm.
“Ahh!”
Taking advantage of the momentary lapse, she twisted and escaped. Just as she was about to re-enter the Duke’s mansion, she collided with someone as she opened the front door and fell onto her backside.
“You reckless girl! Ah, head maid.”
Head maid…?
The guard who had followed bowed hurriedly to the person Anna bumped into. Anna lifted her head.
A middle-aged woman with neatly pinned brown hair was looking down at her.
“Sorry! A suspicious person was wandering around the Duke’s estate…”
The guard bowed politely, sounding embarrassed. The head maid studied Anna briefly before speaking firmly.
“Are you Anna Rose?”
“Yes, that’s me…”
How does she know her name?
“I’m Dia Lawrence, head maid in charge of the Duke’s household staff. Baron Shearton told me you’d be coming soon, Anna. I will escort you to him.”
“Baron Sheaton is looking for me?”
“Yes.”
Baron Shearton wouldn’t be looking for her. Did he call her because of the commotion she caused?
Dia gave Anna a subtle look as if signaling something silently. Come to think of it, that name sounded familiar.
Dia was the one who helped out with housekeeping at Macy’s cabin…
“Is there a problem?”
“N-no, no problem! I’ll go!”
Anna jumped up from her seat. Somehow, she felt if she followed Dia, she might be able to see Macy.
“Macy is not at the Duke’s residence.”
But the words she heard as soon as she entered the empty room were utterly despairing.
“Is that so? Then where is Macy? She’s alive, right?”
“She is alive.”
Though she heard Macy was alive, the answer felt unsettling. It sounded as if Macy was merely alive, but not well.
Tears welled up in Anna’s eyes.
“Even if we knew where Macy is, it’s a place where people like us cannot just walk in.”
“Please, if you know, tell me! I’ll go in!”
“Are you planning to recklessly rush in like today?”
“Well…”
Anna knew it was reckless. But if Macy’s Name treatment was delayed much longer, her body would stiffen.
She couldn’t understand what the Duke was thinking, locking Macy away. Macy’s body was probably stiffening even now, and Anna couldn’t just calmly plan things.
Macy was alive now, but if she made the wrong choice…
Just the thought twisted Anna’s face into despair.
“Don’t cry. We’ve just found an ally.”
“An ally?”
Dia comforted Anna.
“But the situation is dire. We need your help, Anna.”
“I’ll do anything! If it means saving Macy, I’ll do whatever it takes! Please find Macy! Please, please, find Macy for me!”

The doctor who said she would bring a peach soon never came back, no matter how long Macy waited. Was it just pity that made her say that?
Had something urgent came up after she left? Macy suddenly craved the peach more than ever but had no way to contact her, so she sat on her bed, endlessly waiting.
After some time passed, the iron gate creaked open. From within came a familiar figure, stepping steadily forward.
Eren carried a plate with a beautifully cut peach on it. Macy’s face instantly stiffened at the sight of him.
‘I never asked Eren to bring me the peach…’
