Chapter 214
Frowning as if he’d heard something he shouldn’t, Rubens watched Dia smile faintly as she passed by.
He slowly walked toward the source of the sound. The door was half-open and he could see inside from afar.
Macy, her dark hair loose, gently lifted a small life from the cradle. Her posture was quite steady.
The baby quickly stopped crying and giggled, reaching out its hand. Macy gave a faint smile in return.
It was a mature, deep smile far from the fresh innocence he remembered when he first saw her.
Just watching made his heart feel soft somewhere inside.
But the baby’s face was wrapped in a blanket, so it wasn’t clearly visible.
‘If I get closer, I might be able to see.’
Rubens quickened his pace, but the more he walked, the farther the room seemed to get.
Growing impatient, he started moving faster. The corridor stretched endlessly like taffy.
“Macy!”
As he called out urgently, Macy immediately turned toward Rubens.
“Come here. Hurry!”
He felt a dreadful premonition—that if he didn’t catch her now, he might never enter that room again.
Macy stared at him desperately. She reached out her hand, but showed no sign of moving.
The woman who had so recently wrapped the child in warm comfort now seemed frozen like a statue.
Her eyes were empty of any emotion.
The door began to close slowly. Rubens ran until he was gasping for breath.
No matter how fast he ran or how far he reached, he couldn’t close the distance.
The more he ran, the farther he moved away from Macy and the child. His mind went blank.
It felt as if Macy and the child would vanish into nothingness, becoming just dots and was forever unreachable.
Eventually, as if it was all an illusion, they began to dissolve like mist.
“No!”
Rubens shouted sharply, eyes snapping open. He saw a gray wall.
It was the stone wall of the Bayatten mansion.
“Did something happen? Was it a nightmare?”
He felt warm body heat in his arms and heard a woman’s voice. Only then did Rubens sigh in relief.
“Ah… what a ridiculous dream…”
“So you dream too, huh? With that scared, childlike face from a nightmare.”
The woman holding him giggled amusedly. Rubens buried his face in her neck, inhaling her scent deeply.
But something felt off. Instead of a fresh, crisp scent of grass, it was heavy with the smell of roses.
Her voice sounded a little sharper too…
“What the hell is going on?”
Startled by the strange feeling, Rubens sprang up and fiercely demanded to see the woman.
“Haha. Just now you realized?”
The woman in Rubens’s arms was not Macy. It was Isabella, lying on his bed with a mischievous smile.
Rubens immediately pulled back the curtain and looked around.
A large secret door was visible into the wall beside the fireplace.
It was a secret passage linking the outside to the basement, boldly revealed before him.
“Do you usually sleep holding a woman that tight? It’s uncomfortable. I don’t like sleeping all cramped up, so I’m glad we broke off the engagement.”
Isabella had already gotten off the bed and was teasing him.
“By the way, what are those scars on your body? On your hands and all those little ones too. This is my first time seeing a Name. It really says Macy Horton.”
“Don’t touch it.”
As her hand brushed his knuckles, Rubens roughly swatted it away. As disgusted as if it were a bug.
Rubens headed toward the secret passage in his robe, but Isabella’s next words stopped him.
“There’s no point chasing after her now. She left Laden last night.”
“Who?”
“Of course, Macy. Aren’t you looking for her?”
Rubens couldn’t believe the situation. He must still be dreaming. No, whether in dream or reality, Macy was not by his side.
A ringing sound pierced sharply into his ears.
