Chapter 49
Why had he come to like her? Had something gone wrong when he was struck back then, or, as Anne had said, was it because his first time had felt too overwhelming.
No, Logan had found the answer now. For a very long time, ever since the engagement, or perhaps since the day of his seventh birthday, there had been no one but Anne Agnes for him. He had neither the reason nor the room to look at other women. He had been too busy fearing when his terrifying fiancée might charge at him again.
The fiancée who had once been a doll-like five-year-old, and had now grown into a mature woman, said,
“No, seriously, that doesn’t make sense. Wasn’t it just that you liked doing that too much?”
Logan clenched his fist tightly. It would be dishonest to say it hadn’t been that good. To be honest, it really had been that good. But even so, he still had no desire to try it with another woman.
He glared at her fiercely. It wasn’t a look a man would give to a woman he liked. Anne cautiously watched his mood, and he spoke curtly.
“It’s not that.”
Saying he disliked Anne Agnes was far more familiar and easier than saying he liked her.
He disliked Anne Agnes. And yet, because of his mother’s insistence, he had maintained the engagement for over ten years. But was that really true? If he had truly hated her that much, wouldn’t he have stood up to his mother long ago, like he did today.
When he first spoke of breaking the engagement, had he really wanted it. Or had he simply wanted to hear her say that it didn’t matter even if he couldn’t fulfill his role as a man. Because she had always been like that. Even if it was for the sake of her family.
She was his. That was an unchanging promise. That was what responsibility meant. Logan felt wronged. He had finally decided to be with her, and now she was going to abandon him?
“You injured me. You made it obvious the engagement was forced. You were the one who pounced first, and now you’re even cheating—”
“Well, that’s…”
Anne had little to say in her defense. The engagement had indeed been forced, and hadn’t both of them shown their dislike. And although she had pounced first, he had been the more enthusiastic one afterward.
The real problem was the ‘cheating’. Should she clear up the misunderstanding, or not…
Another drop slipped out and ran down Logan’s cheek. A handsome man even looked beautiful when he cried. Faced with the surreal sight, Anne found herself speechless. Logan lowered his head as if declaring defeat.
“But I still like you. Anne Agnes…”
Heat flared across Anne’s face. Her heart pounded wildly.
No, does this even make sense? Honestly, if he had said he hated her enough to want to kill her, that would have been easier to understand. Even she thought she had done enough to deserve that.
For a moment, she wondered if Logan was playing a trick on her. Was this revenge. Was he trying to seduce her first, then dump her to get his pride back.
“I, I, I…”
“I’m not asking you to like me. You can hate me. Just stay by my side.”
But the moment he lowered his pride so completely, almost to the point of humiliation, her suspicion melted away. There was no way this could be an act. Finally believing his sincerity, Anne felt her breath catch. This was too much, too heavy to simply brush off.
Anne sat there blankly, unable to speak. Really? Was this real? Unable to endure the tension, she suddenly jumped to her feet. Logan looked up at her with wet eyes. He looked like an abandoned puppy.
What do I do. I feel like I have to pick him up. Anne shifted her feet in place, flustered. Then Logan delivered another heavy blow.
“Do you… hate me that much?”
“Ah, just shut up for a second!”
Anne shouted. She was already confused enough, why was he pressing her like this.
At her outburst, Logan’s shoulders drooped again. Somehow he looked pitiful, and even a little cute. Anne startled at her own thought. Cute, my a*s!
Whatever. Anne hesitated, then spoke.
“I don’t… hate you.”
Logan looked at her again. The expectation filling his blue eyes was overwhelming. Anne quickly avoided his gaze. Logan grew dejected again and said,
“If it’s because you feel sorry for hurting me, then it’s fine…”
“No, it’s not that, so just wait a moment. Just, just!”
Logan quietly lowered his eyes. The absurd thought crossed her mind that he was even cuter when he listened so well. Have you lost your mind, seriously! Anne thought, and smacked her head hard.
