Chapter 144
Damn it. Why do these damn knights have such inhumanly keen senses?
“I don’t know anything about that.”
“I can still hear it a little.”
“Really? Is that true?”
“No. I was just teasing.”
“Hey!”
Duvalkan chuckled merrily.
Despite the slight unease caused by Ashtel’s disheveled appearance, he was starting to enjoy the standoff.
At this rate, it seemed like he had caught Ashtel in a vulnerable position.
‘The noble lady caught in the act of running away with her beloved priest…’
Duvalkan wiped the smile from his face and took a step forward.
“Wait, don’t come in.”
“Then I’d like you to clear up my doubts.”
“There’s nothing to clear up.”
“Instead of a man’s voice, there’s some… vibrating sound. How do you explain that?”
“Ugh.”
Did she make the vibrations too loud?
Ashtel’s gaze faltered, and without realizing it, she started moving toward the bedroom.
“I guess it’s over there.”
“Wait, hold on!”
Duvalkan tried to step forward, but Ashtel quickly blocked him.
The more she talked to this man, the more cornered she felt.
Ashtel, feeling uneasy, finally realized he was just like any other man.
Like Payne, he was a servant of Katzel, but so what? As a succubus, she’d do what she did best.
“Please, just go away.”
She decided to confront him physically.
“Wait, just a moment…”
Duvalkan, true to his investigative nature, wore a thin outer garment, cotton pants, and leather boots.
As Ashtel swiftly approached and grabbed his arm to push him out, she felt his firm chest against hers, freezing Duvalkan in place.
Duvalkan grit his teeth, looking anywhere but at her.
“What are you doing?!”
“I’m pushing you away!”
“Do you think this will hide Father Payne?”
“That’s not Payne over there. It’s another man!”
“Really? Do you think I’ll believe that?”
Duvalkan tried his best not to notice the warm scent of Ashtel’s skin and the soft curls falling onto her white neck.
“The day you disappeared, Father Payne disappeared too!”
“Why does that matter?”
“It’s too suspicious to be a coincidence!”
“It could be a coincidence!”
“Even if it is, the higher-ups at the temple won’t think so. A team of knights has already been dispatched!”
“…Knights?”
Ashtel, successfully pushing Duvalkan out the door, froze at his next words.
“I came secretly to warn you, Miss. You’re the daughter of some noble family, are you?”
“Huh?”
What on earth is he talking about?
Ashtel stared at Duvalkan, with her mouth open in confusion, but when she saw the narrowing of his eyes, she nodded reluctantly.
“Y-yeah. How did you know?”
“It’s obvious. Look at your hands. They’re far too delicate for a poor commoner.”
“Oh, that’s right.”
“Ha…”
Ashtel wanted to pretend she didn’t understand, but there was no helping it.
She tried to act clever, but it didn’t work. Her half-hearted attempt made Duvalkan decide to help her out.
“I’d love to take Father Payne with me, but I came to hear his opinion as well. If you love each other, it’s only right that you stay together.”
“O-okay…”
Ashtel’s large scarlet eyes trembled.
So Duvalkan was on her side? The feeling quickly faded.
‘Payne wouldn’t want to be with me.’
It made sense. She was the cause of his heat and the one who took him to the demon realm, after all. Above all, she was a demon.
‘What should I do?’
She clenched her fists and swallowed a sigh that threatened to escape. Duvalkan tilted his head slightly and spoke decisively.
“Now, will you let me in?”
It was clear he wouldn’t back down unless he saw Payne right now.
Ashtel, cornered like a trapped rat, closed her mouth tight and hunched her shoulders.
‘I need to think… I need to think…’
“Miss Maid?”
“Wait, just a moment. Uh, well…”
Right, she needed to get dressed first and send Duvalkan out. In the meantime, she’d get Payne and slip out through the window.
“Don’t think about escaping. There’s no one in Singria who can outrun a Medialle knight.”
“Ugh.”
“Are you feeling guilty now? Were you planning to escape?”
“N-no?”
Ashtel tugged at her hair in frustration.
She realized she couldn’t let things continue this way. She needed time to think, so she was about to ask him to leave…
“At least let me get dressed first. The night air is cold…”
“Huhk.”
Duvalkan suddenly collapsed forward.
Ashtel squeezed her eyes shut as his large body tilted toward her.
But strangely, she didn’t feel any weight at all.
“Sue, open your eyes.”
Instead, a familiar voice reached her ears.
“O-oh?”
A mysterious woman appeared, striking Duvalkan at the back of his head.
“Sis Jo?”
It was Ashtel’s tenth sister, Jo.
