Chapter 189
The very first person Liz sought out after arriving in the human world wasn’t Van—it was Chacha.
“Huh? What are you doing here?”
Chacha, Liz’s older sister, spent most of her time in the human world but maintained a close bond with Liz.
Their similar ages and neighboring territories naturally fostered their bond, and Chacha’s gentle personality helped balance out Liz’s sensitivity.
“You haven’t heard yet, have you?”
“Heard what?”
“Sue was attacked. By a paladin from Mediale.”
“What?!”
Chacha immediately clung to Liz, demanding to know when, where, and exactly who had attacked their youngest.
For someone so knowledgeable about the human realm, it was a shock that she hadn’t even sensed the threat to her little sister.
Seeing Chacha burn with rage just like the other sisters, Liz smirked.
“It was a knight named Van. Long black hair, stoic face. Apparently, he’s a vice-captain.”
“A vice-captain in Mediale… that’s a pretty high rank.”
Without mentioning Ashtel’s warning not to get involved, Liz continued.
“So I’m going after him now.”
“All right. I’ll go with you!”
Chacha had spent plenty of time in Singria, the capital of the Roxa Empire—after all, a bustling city full of humans was practically a playground for someone as nosy as her.
“The problem is getting close to Mediale… My powers won’t be enough to completely disguise myself.”
Chacha adjusted her oversized yellow glasses, carefully devising a plan.
“Our magic can seduce a human, though not as perfectly as Biche’s brainwashing. We’ll have to lure someone who’s headed for the temple.”
“That’s my specialty.”
A priest would be too risky, so they would target a devout follower instead.
‘I’ll cut off that paladin’s head and give it to Sue.’
Ashtel might have let go of revenge for Payne’s sake, but so what? A demon should at least settle a score like this.
With a lingering smile, Liz set out for Mediale with Chacha at her side.
* * *
But they hadn’t expected the news they soon overheard.
“What did he just say?”
“That’s the cardinal, not just anybody. Keep a low profile—you don’t want to get caught.”
“No, I mean—did he just say Sue’s human is going to be executed?”
“That’s what it sounds like…”
They’d managed to sneak into Mediale, but without tools like Carmen’s artifacts or Ashtel’s shapeshifting, their best bet was to find Van and draw him out.
Tracing his magical trail led them to a remote, hidden underground prison deep within the temple.
But instead of Van, they found Payne.
That made sense—Van might be guarding Payne after bringing him here.
But Payne looked absolutely terrible.
Though she hadn’t seen him when he parted from Ashtel, Liz knew for sure her little sister hadn’t wished for this outcome.
‘Payne was sent back to the temple. As the Duke’s illegitimate son, surely they wouldn’t kill him recklessly—or so we were told.’
Hadn’t she said that?
Liz and Chacha slipped out of the prison to discuss.
“Isn’t that guy supposed to be a noble’s bastard? Why are they executing him?”
“If he’s an abandoned child, even with noble blood, that’s reason enough. If they see him as a political liability, they’d want him gone even more.”
Chacha’s answer made Liz click her tongue. Sometimes, humans were crueler than demons.
He’s their own child, yet they’d kill him over something so trivial.
‘This just makes Sue the pitiable one.’
Honestly, she didn’t care if Payne lived or died.
But thinking of her youngest sister suffering heartbreak and crying all over again made her blood boil.
She wanted to tear apart not only Van, but also that cardinal.
“Liz, look—over there. Isn’t that the guy?”
“Where?”
Just then, someone’s presence caught their attention.
Chacha quickly cast invisibility, erasing their forms.
Her power worked much like Carmen’s cloaking device but was on a higher level—it even let her pass through objects like a ghost, though Liz thought the downside was not being able to touch humans. Still, it was a big help right now.
Van appeared near the underground prison, sensing something amiss.
“…Who’s there?”
He stepped closer, swinging his sword through the air just as he had when Ashtel hid nearby, but he caught nothing.
Liz and Chacha covered their mouths and exchanged glances.
‘That’s him, right?’
