Chapter 136
‘It’s okay. My senses have developed anyway, and now there’s really not much time left.’
Just as she was steadying her trembling breath and rising to her feet, Rezus asked with a seemingly confused expression.
“Why…… did you betray them?”
“……”
It was a face that truly couldn’t imagine Psyche betraying Mathes. Words rose to the tip of her tongue—why are you making that face, shouldn’t you be happy that I betrayed Mathes as you wanted? But instead, Psyche uttered different words.
“When Ruon finally revealed the secrets, did it look like betrayal to you?”
For an instant, she clearly saw Rezus’s eyes waver.
“To me, it looked like desperate pleading.”
“……”
“Begging to be saved, rescued, helped…”
Stop, please…. I’ll tell you the secrets…, stop, please, I beg you…
For a moment, the face and voice of the devastated boy echoed in her mind. Psyche squeezed her eyes shut. She bowed her head deeply and covered her face with her palms to hide her terribly contorted expression. Her throat was so choked that she could only continue speaking after swallowing several times.
“How could I ignore that….. Monsters without blood or tears like you might be able to ignore such things, but I can’t.”
After saying that much, she couldn’t hold back the rising nausea and hurriedly grabbed the bathroom counter. Ughk…! Even though there was nothing left to come up and only bile emerged, the retching continued without stopping.
“Huk, heuk……”
As she gripped the counter as if she might break it, gasping painfully, a piercing ringing sound filled her ears. Her vision spun dizzily, and her head felt like it was about to split. It felt as if she had completely hit rock bottom, both physically and mentally.
In the moment her legs weakened and she staggered, Rezus firmly supported her from behind. Psyche didn’t even have the strength to tell him to let go, so she just breathed heavily before pulling away from his embrace.
Fortunately, Rezus didn’t hold on to her.

A world tinged with blue shimmered in the sunlight. As she blinked hazily, a laughter so soft it tickled her ears came from behind. Her eyes widened as she turned toward the sound, filling first with delight before melting into sadness.
Under the azure sky, on an endless green field, a family was enjoying a picnic on a red checkered blanket. It was a cherished scene she had seen countless times in her dreams, one she could never witness in reality again.
A young girl and boy laughed brightly as they frolicked across the field, while their mother and father—younger than she remembered—watched their children with contentment. It was a moment of such peace it made her heart ache.
Just as she reflexively reached toward that happy moment, a brilliant white light poured down. The sudden brightness stung her eyes, forcing Psyche to close them.
Then came the sensation of falling somewhere. When she regained her senses and opened her eyes, she saw herself and her brother sitting companionably on a long wooden bench, gazing up at the sky.
Unconsciously, Psyche followed their gaze upward. The pitch-black night sky was densely packed with countless stars. She stared endlessly at the beauty so intense it nearly blinded her, when a gentle—warm breeze caressed her cheek tenderly as it passed. She slowly closed her eyes, then opened them.
Just then, the intimate conversation between the siblings tickled her ears.
‘Psyche, if you were to gain strength greater than anyone else’s, what would you want to do first?’
‘Hmm… I don’t know. I haven’t thought about that yet… Oh! I want to help people who are suffering.’
‘People who are suffering?’
‘Yes. We live comfortably, but… there are so many people in this world who are in pain. I want to help them.’
‘Geez, you’re just too kind.’
Perhaps twenty years old, Zephyros—standing at the boundary between boy and man—held a gentle smile on his lips as he playfully rubbed the chubby cheek of the little girl. As she watched that scene from a distance with dampened eyes, her body floated up, then fell somewhere, and the scene changed again.
‘Brother… what do we do? What do we do? How are we going to live now?’
‘I’ll protect you. Don’t worry, Psyche. No matter what happens… at least you, I will definitely protect you.’
It was the image of herself crying miserably, and her brother comforting her with a hardened expression. Seeing that scene, strangely, her chest tightened. She clutched her chest as her face contorted. At that moment, her vision blurred dizzily, then her mind cleared as if cold water had been thrown over her.
“Huk…!”
Her eyes flew open. For a while, she couldn’t regain her senses. As she blinked vacantly, tears rolled down her temples.
