Chapter 137
Psyche tried wiping away her tears with a weak hand, but when her face only grew more soaked despite her efforts, she simply covered it with both hands.
Why did I have to dream this today? Why.
Why did things turn out this way? In the dream, everything was so happy. So peaceful, and it felt like everything would be alright.
But why did it end up like this? How did it come to this? Why. Why. Why.
As she bit her lip and swallowed her sobs, the image of Zephyros who cherished her in the dream overlapped with Zephyros who cruelly tortured a helpless person.
‘I can’t forgive him. I’ll never forgive him.’
It was an emotion she had deliberately avoided confronting. Because once she faced it, she knew she would collapse under the unstoppable surge of anger and betrayal.
No matter that she remembered her past life, no matter that she realized this world was the world of a novel… To her, this world was everything. There was a time when Zephyros was her entire world. How much had she depended on her brother after losing her parents who had loved and protected her so much?
She had endured and overcome the world-shattering pain with him. She believed that no matter what hardships came, she could live bravely as long as she was with her brother.
That’s what she had believed.
“Ah, huk…”
Once unleashed, her emotions wouldn’t easily calm. Not wanting anyone to hear her crying, she tightly covered her mouth with both hands when she heard someone knocking at the door.
She glanced briefly toward the door, then pulled the blanket over herself again. As she took a long breath in and out, trying somehow to calm her surging emotions, the knocking sound came once more.
“……”
Psyche remained curled up as if frozen for a moment before finally getting up from the bed. Who could be coming at this hour? It was past 3 AM. Had someone come to warn her to stop crying because it was noisy?
She hurriedly wiped away her tears with both hands and turned on the dimmest light. Just as she was about to walk toward the door, a splitting headache so intense it felt like her head was being cleaved in two overwhelmed her. Ugh, Psyche groaned softly as she clutched her forehead.
When the headache subsided somewhat, she began walking again. After taking a few more breaths in front of the door, she carefully opened it.
“……Serdin?”
The man standing before her was Serdin. He looked down at her with a rigid expression, his lips twitching, then roughly ran his hand through his hair and let out a long sigh. Even after that, his lips moved several more times before he finally spoke.
“……Are you okay?”
His gaze was full of concern. Psyche silently looked up at him. It was the first time she’d seen his face since their conversation a few days ago.
She didn’t know why he hadn’t visited her even once during that time. Whether he had been busy with something as his presence hadn’t been felt in the mansion at all, or whether he had deliberately avoided her because he felt uncomfortable after their conversation, she couldn’t tell.
What mattered was that right now, she desperately needed warmth. And the man before her seemed capable of providing the warmth she wanted. Psyche spoke as if whispering.
“……Come in.”
“It’s too late. I just wanted to see your face.”
His firm refusal came immediately. But he couldn’t leave right away. Serdin hesitated with obvious reluctance on his face, clenched his fist tightly, then muttered in a low, strained voice.
“Stop crying.”
His expression suggested he had more to say, but he closed his mouth and turned away. Psyche grabbed Serdin’s arm as he was about to leave and turned him back around.
“I had a nightmare.”
His eyes trembled uncontrollably. She bit her lower lip hard and lowered her gaze.
“I felt so cold, lonely, and scared. Alone… it’s hard to endure. So, don’t go.”
There was no response from him. Psyche carefully met his eyes again and pleaded desperately.
“Don’t go, Serdin.”
Conflict showed on his face for a moment, but soon he nodded and followed her into the room. Though it wasn’t his first time in her room, Serdin seemed awkward. He appeared to be struggling with guilt, wondering if this was really okay. Unlike him, moving his body unnaturally, Psyche walked naturally to the bed.
“……I’ll just watch you sleep and then leave.”
“Yes, okay.”
While Psyche lay down on the bed, Serdin walked slowly over and sat in the chair beside it.
