Chapter 102
Heesu, who wanted to avoid becoming on the same level as Edstan, quickly tore her eyes away from the raw meat and raised her head to call out to the butcher shop owner.
“I’d like some samgyeopsal, please!”
The owner, a woman with a somehow dark complexion, looked at Heesu.
“How much?”
“Hmm……. There are four men and two women, so how much would be enough?”
“Do they all eat a lot?”
“Uh, they don’t eat that much, and one person eats especially little…… but one person eats an awful lot…….”
“I think 2.5kg would be enough for that. If you want to eat plenty, then 3kg…….”
“3kg, please!”
Heesu decided to order a generous amount, thinking they might as well eat until they were full. She figured if there were leftovers, Violen would somehow use them for cooking, so it was better to have too much than to be disappointed by not having enough.
Heesu watched without taking her eyes off the owner as she took out the meat, sliced it appropriately, and put it into a plastic bag. Even though it was raw meat she couldn’t eat right away, her mouth kept watering.
“Here you go.”
“Thank you very much! Here’s the payment.”
Edstan quickly took the meat the owner handed him and hugged it close as if it were precious. Heesu handed the owner her card. The owner, who took the card, swiped it, and waited for the signature, still had a dark complexion.
“…….”
The owner, who was about to hand the card back, just looked at Heesu. Heesu, who had grabbed the card but found the owner wouldn’t let go, also looked at her with a puzzled expression. After a long moment of staring at each other with the card between them, the owner finally asked.
“Miss. Do you know my daughter?”
“Eh……?”
At the unexpected question, Heesu was puzzled. The owner calmly continued.
“Her name is Lee Jin-ah, and she’s in the same university and the same major as you. My daughter used to tell me that she often saw you passing by, and that it seemed like you had moved nearby recently…….”
“Uh…….”
Heesu scratched her head with a troubled expression. Although she was a college student, she was an outcast who often skipped lectures and didn’t participate in any events, so she had almost no college friends she knew. Even though she always passed this butcher shop in her neighborhood, this was the first time she learned that a friend from the same university worked there.
And yet, the other person remembered her and had always talked about her.
“Here, she looks like this.”
When Heesu seemed not to know, the owner hurriedly took out a photo and held it out.
The photo she held showed a girl with a simple appearance and round glasses, smiling. She had the look of a model student. Her face was so common and lacked any particular features that Heesu felt even more troubled. It seemed both familiar and unfamiliar.
“You don’t know her?”
“No…….”
Heesu returned the photo as if she felt sorry. She felt guilty toward the owner for no reason.
“The thing is, my daughter…… hasn’t been seen at all for a while now…….”
The owner, who continued to speak with a dark complexion, pursed her lips tightly. The corners of her mouth trembled, a sign that she was trying to hold back tears.
“She suddenly hasn’t come home for a few days without a word. She doesn’t answer her phone either……. I’ve already filed a missing person report, but the police told me to wait because she’s an adult and it might be a runaway case. But my daughter would never do that. I’m not just saying that because she’s my daughter, but really…… she was always so diligent and came home early to help with the shop. She’s a good and gentle child who has never caused any trouble…… I’m just so worried that something bad might have happened to her……. I thought maybe you, being from the same university, might know something…… Sniffle…… Oh, how foolish of me. I haven’t been myself lately. I just asked on the off chance, so don’t worry about it.”
The owner, who had been speaking with difficulty, quickly wiped away the tears that streamed down her cheeks. Heesu, feeling her own emotions well up, grabbed the owner’s hand and squeezed it tightly.
“Don’t worry so much, ma’am. Jin-ah will definitely come back safely. I’ll look for her, and if I find anything, I’ll come right back and let you know.”
“Oh, thank you so much, miss. Sob…….”
The owner continued to sob and wipe away her flowing tears, and Heesu held her hand for a while before the owner told her she should go. As she walked away, the matter weighed heavily on her mind, and she turned back to look at the butcher shop several times.
