Chapter 150
The pawns on the chessboard moved even more wildly, and Izzen’s crisis arrived sooner than expected.
In chess, there is a piece called the pawn. It is the most basic piece, and while eight are given, it can only advance one square at a time, except for the first move when it can move two. It is also a weak piece, unable to capture an enemy directly in front of it.
However, if this piece advances step-by-step and reaches the last rank, it can become any piece except the King. A Knight, a Bishop, or even a Queen. Thus, in chess, it was possible for the weakest being to become the strongest, corner the King, and call checkmate.
Just like this.
“If this is all because of me, I should be the one to end it.”
“You lunatic…… What on earth are you doing! Do you think you can defeat me?! You, a low-class demon of the lowest rank……!”
“I think I can?”
“Ha! A primitive creature whose only weapon is a tentacle is nothing!”
“Is that so?”
Violen chuckled and placed his palm on the tentacle that was wrapped around Izzen. Instantly, a lightning-like spark crackled and flowed through the tentacle, striking him in an instant. Izzen convulsed and screamed, feeling the intense electric current piercing his body.
“Uwaaaah!! W-What is this……. How can you do this!”
“You should know better.”
To the horrified Izzen, the one who was clearly just a pawn smiled faintly and retorted.
Yes. He knew. But he never thought it would come to this.
Heesu’s magical power was stronger than Izzen had estimated, and the two had s*x more frequently than he had expected. As a result, Violen had become excessively powerful, and with that power, he was moving according to his own will and had come to betray Izzen.
“Oop……!”
Violen jammed a tentacle into Izzen’s mouth so he couldn’t scream, and then attempted to touch the connecting tentacle with a pure white flash he had conjured in his palm. He truly intended to kill him.
“Nyaaa-ong!”
Izzen quickly transformed into a cat before the electric current flowing through the tentacle could reach him. Having shrunk in volume, he slipped out of the tentacle, bolted out the window without looking back, and fled for his life.
He thought it was a truly undignified exit, even by his own standards.
The blow he had taken was greater than expected, so he could only somewhat recover after wandering around and having s*x with a few female cats. Izzen, barely able to control his body, sat on a roof of a random house under the night sky and let out a sigh of dejected resignation with a miserable heart.
“Haa…….”
In the end, he had lost. He had been miserably pushed out of a game that he had clearly set up.
‘What do I do now?’
He was lost in that thought for a long time. Then, he wondered if he even needed to reach a conclusion on that matter. This was a game that was already out of his hands.
Perhaps it was for the best. He would have been beaten to death by Jaeha anyway if he had stayed. If he ran away now, he could at least save his life. Whether Jaeha subjugated Heesu or became the Demon King was now his decision. The continued existence of the demons was also no longer something he could control.
He had done enough. Now, everything was out of his hands.
He wasn’t worried. Even if the Demon World was destroyed, he felt that they would be fine. He had a vague belief that, no matter what happened, they would continue to stick together and live well. Because they were bound by ties, unlike him.
Unlike him.
The moment he thought that, Izzen felt something welling up inside him. It was tears. It was natural to feel miserable, but strangely, he felt grief. He hadn’t felt this heartbroken even when his tutor beat him as a child for not living kindly.
‘Are you happy?’
No, he wasn’t happy.
‘I asked if you are happy that everything went according to plan. That the target has now perfectly fallen into your trap and is moving according to your will.’
The moment he heard that, he somehow felt wronged.
‘Violen, I…….’
So, he involuntarily tried to say something, as if making an excuse. Not because things hadn’t gone according to plan, as Violen had claimed.
Though he quickly shut his mouth, if he had continued, he would have said something. Something that he himself wasn’t quite sure of, but likely something very unlike a villain or a mastermind.
What on earth had he been about to say?
Izzen pondered for a moment, but then he stopped even that. There was no point in thinking about such things now.
His role was over. Now, he just had to exit like a loser. Leaving behind the things he had put behind him.
Izzen counted the things he had to leave behind. His father’s will to live as a wicked villain and mastermind, his resolve to rebuild the Demon World, his ambition to serve the Demon King and live as a man of his clan, and…….
It was strange. Although he had lived considering all of those things so important, he now felt like none of it mattered. As he was about to make his exit, the thing that weighed most heavily on his mind was none of those things.
It was simply the image of them all together that kept flickering in his mind. Heesu, the other demons, living in the same house, eating meals together, exercising together…….
He missed that. That had been more enjoyable than he thought. Because he had never been that close to anyone in that way.
It was then that Izzen finally realized why he felt such grief.
In truth, a corner of his heart had wanted to genuinely get along with them, without plots, calculations, or schemes, just thoughtlessly. But in the end, he couldn’t do that, and now he had to leave them alone.
That fact was heartbreaking. Even though it was the price he paid for his own actions. Even though it was the natural result of drawing a line between them and trying to use them.
It was only natural that nothing had gone according to his will. If he couldn’t even control his own heart, who could he possibly control to do his bidding?
He ultimately could not become a wicked villain or a mastermind. Yet, he also failed to live kindly and righteously, as his childhood heart had desired.
He was just a half-measure, neither one thing nor the other, in the end.

As he was about to leave, the financial issue weighed on his mind. Heesu had suddenly become responsible for living with four incompetent individuals who were essentially illegal residents. They would be in urgent need of money.
Izzen immediately deposited fifty million won into Heesu’s account. That was the best he could do after setting aside the money tied up in stocks and the amount he needed for himself. He didn’t have to worry about the monthly rent, as it was already set for automatic transfer from his account. He planned to monitor the situation and, if another financial problem arose, find a way to make more money and deposit it.
It would be even better if Jaeha took over the responsibility later.
‘Am I still holding on to regret?’
Izzen sighed, feeling pathetic for not being able to let go of his regret. But he still wanted to see Heesu become the Demon King’s consort just as much as he wanted Jaeha to become the Demon King.
Izzen belatedly realized that he had liked Heesu. After watching her by his side, Heesu had the perfect qualities to be the Demon King’s consort. It felt as if it was Heesu’s destiny to become his consort just as much as it was Jaeha’s to become the Demon King.
But what good was that now?
—Vrrr.
As he walked down the street after leaving the bank, his phone vibrated.
Jaeha again? Izzen instinctively shivered. Jaeha had been calling several times since the morning, perhaps having finally caught on. He had been ignoring them with the intention of running away, but the mere fact that the calls were coming was terrifying.
Should I just turn off my phone? Izzen glanced at the screen with that thought.
But the name on the screen wasn’t Jaeha’s. It was the name of the demon who served as his informant. As Izzen hurriedly answered the phone, a voice immediately spoke urgently.
“Asta has arrived in Korea.”
“What?”
Asta was the most dangerous demon currently. Having tragically lost his wife during the war, he was consumed by a desire for revenge against humans and was indiscriminately capturing and devouring them. Izzen had tried to approach and persuade him but was only met with ridicule.
Since he was a demon seeking to increase his power, he would likely be looking for humans with strong magical power to catch and devour. Heesu was in danger. Perhaps he had even come to Korea specifically looking for Heesu.
Izzen transformed into a cat and frantically ran to find Heesu.
Fortunately, Heesu was still safe. She was loitering with the other demons near a cotton candy stand in the park.
The problem was that Asta was not too far away.
Having confirmed their locations, Izzen was agonized. He felt hesitant to step forward to warn them of the danger. Since Violen and Edstan were already well aware that the situation could become dangerous at any time, he thought they might be careful without his interference.
Izzen decided to simply follow Heesu and watch over her. Even though he couldn’t do much in his current state, he felt uneasy, as if Asta would find Heesu if he took his eyes off her for even a moment.
‘I wish they would just pass by without running into each other…….’
But contrary to Izzen’s wish, Heesu moved closer and closer to Asta. Furthermore, upon noticing that a human was in danger, she attempted to enter the alley where Asta was.
“Nyaaa!”
In a panic, Izzen, still in his cat form, rushed forward and blocked Heesu. He knew it would be useless, but his body moved first. He tried to stop Heesu by bumping into her. But Heesu eventually stepped over Izzen and headed toward the alley.
In the end, Heesu met Asta and was dragged away by him.
“Nyaaa…….”
Izzen, who had been watching the scene in despair, transformed back into a human and frantically grabbed his phone. He no longer had time to worry about his own safety. Jaeha was the only one who could save Heesu now.
***
Jaeha, who had immediately started cursing as soon as he picked up the phone, instantly rushed over upon hearing that Heesu was in danger. He gnashed his teeth with a terrifying expression the moment he saw Izzen, but realizing that time was of the essence, he asked no questions and hurried after him toward the warehouse where Heesu had been dragged.
Heesu was visible through a long, short window. Fortunately, she seemed to be safe for the moment, but Asta was already touching her. At this rate, she would be assaulted while he searched for the entrance. He had to save her immediately.
However, the narrow window was clearly not large enough for an adult male to climb through.
As Izzen fretted, Jaeha, who was nervously watching the area, spoke abruptly.
“Hey. Transform into a cat.”
“What? Why suddenly……”
“F**k! Just do what I tell you, it’s urgent!”
Under Jaeha’s pressure, Izzen asked no more questions and immediately transformed into a cat.
“Nyaaaaaa!”
The moment Izzen transformed into a cat, Jaeha snatched him by the scruff of his neck and threw him through the window. Izzen, who was thrown in a terrified scream, involuntarily landed on Asta’s back, leaped up, and transformed back into his human form upon landing. Thanks to this, his claws sharply raked down Asta’s back.
“Cough!”
Asta screamed in pain from the impact. In fact, Izzen was the one who wanted to scream. His vision spun, and cold sweat ran down his body from the events that had occurred so quickly. His arms and legs were trembling, making it difficult to even stand.
‘Lord Jaeha, what on earth have you done……!’
Izzen looked at the window in shock, but Jaeha was no longer visible beyond it. He probably meant for him to buy time until he came back around to the entrance.
“Izzen!”
A surprised Heesu called out his name.
“Astonishing. I never thought you would come to save her. I guess you’ve grown quite attached to this magical girl?”
Asta, momentarily taken aback, cackled and mocked him, looking amused.
‘No, I didn’t exactly come to save her.’
While secretly flustered by their reaction, Izzen put on a relaxed expression and struck a pose. He spun the staff in his hand, pointed it toward Asta, and smirked.
“You still talk too much unnecessary nonsense. Even while claiming to be a villain, you can’t abandon that useless chatter at the crucial moment. That’s why you’ll never succeed. You always mess things up that way.”
Since things had come to this, it seemed better to at least pretend to be a hero of justice for a moment.
He absolutely refused to have a more undignified moment than this.
***
And then he got beaten. He got so severely beaten that he felt all the previous beatings were just a drop in the bucket.
He truly thought he was going to die this time. He did, in fact, hover between life and death several times. Since he had contacted Jaeha to save Heesu, knowing it might come to this, he had no regrets. In a strange way, he felt slightly relieved in a corner of his mind, as he would be dying after having paid some kind of price.
He just kept spouting nonsense until the very end. Although he ultimately failed to become a true mastermind, he wanted his end to be somewhat like one.
“You lunatic.”
But soon, his consciousness returned. As he opened his eyes, tasting the coppery flavor of blood in his mouth, he saw Jaeha withdrawing his hand from his mouth. Blood was collected on his fingertip. It seemed he had transferred demonic power to him in that way.
“I’d like to leave you to die, but…….”
“But…… why…….”
“Don’t misunderstand. I’m not saving you because you’re pretty. I’m saving you because I need you.”
“What do you mean by that……”
“Get me a list of the dangerous bastards scattered across the Human World organized.”
“…….”
Izzen was momentarily stunned, grasping Jaeha’s intent. The chessboard, which had already left his hands, seemed determined to move in a direction entirely different from what he had expected.
***
“Anyway, thank you for saving me, even when you were in such a bad state. I owe you my life.”
Heesu said that, bowing deeply toward him.
Izzen was flustered. He didn’t deserve such thanks. While he thought that, his face instantly felt flushed and a tingling sensation spread through him. He was so flustered that he didn’t know what to do, which was unlike him.
This was what the young Izzen, who had wanted to live kindly and rightly, had so desperately wanted.
“Ah, please. Don’t say things like ‘thank you.’ It’s absolutely terrible. I only saved you because I needed you, Miss Heesu. That was all just part of my malicious scheme.”
Now that it had come to this, and he was feeling the way he did back then, he couldn’t change who he was anymore. Thus, Izzen pretended to be disgusted and spat out mean-spirited words as they came to him.
As a result, a few minutes later, he would suffer the humiliation of being heavily mocked by the siblings, but at the time, that’s what happened.
