Chapter 4
She couldn’t believe it. The extraordinary was really there. Wondering if it was a dream, she pinched her arm and the sharp sensation made her snap to attention. Wondering if it was a hallucination, she shook her head vigorously and looked straight ahead, but it was the same.
Even so, she couldn’t believe it. She still wondered if she was watching a scene from a magical girl story. But Heesu had never seen such a monster in any of the magical girl stories she had watched so far.
After hesitating briefly, Heesu soon stepped forward and walked bravely ahead. She felt that if she found where those tree roots extended from, she could learn the monster’s identity.
“……Huh.”
After just a few steps, Heesu gasped in surprise upon discovering something else.
At the source of the tree roots, in the center of the black smoke.
It was a giant eyeball.
A single giant eyeball wrapped in bumpy skin like a reptile’s surface was slowly blinking its eyelids. The color of that eye was vividly red in contrast to the pitch-black skin. From that eyeball, several strands of root-like things extended upward, moving this way and that, while several other strands extended toward the ground, crawling around like snakes. The bound people were probably at the ends of the roots pointing upward.
It was a terrifying sight, but instead of being afraid, Heesu observed its appearance with her eyes wide open, taking in every detail. She wanted to firmly engrave this extraordinary scene she had finally encountered into her mind. It wasn’t that she didn’t think it was dangerous, but even if she fled, the place Heesu had to go was just her insufferably boring daily life anyway. She felt like whatever happens, happens.
“You evil monster! Release those people right now!!”
Her “whatever happens, happens” attitude went too far and ended up running wild. When she came to her senses, Heesu found herself unknowingly pointing at the monster and shouting bravely.
The monster flinched at her brave action. The moving tree roots stopped, and the eyeball slowly turned toward Heesu. When she met those bright red eyes, Heesu felt a chill down her spine. She wondered if she had been brave for no reason.
Behind such a Heesu, slowly, a black shadow approached.
“I’m impressed. You’re truly a brave person.”
At the voice heard from behind her, Heesu gulped.
……Could it be, this is. Perhaps, really? The moment she thought that, Heesu’s heart began to race again. Heesu quickly pushed away the regret she had been feeling about being brave for no reason just moments before. And she slowly turned around to see who had approached her.
Indeed, a suspiciously drawn-looking man was there. A man wearing a tuxedo and something like a magician’s hat. When light purple eyes were revealed between curly purple bangs, Heesu’s eyes flashed as she met his gaze. It was an appearance that could absolutely never exist in reality. This man’s very existence was the pinnacle of the extraordinary.
The man looked down at Heesu and smiled meaningfully.
“To not be afraid upon seeing that… You’re indeed no ordinary human.”
“……Wh-what is that thing?”
Heesu asked, pointing at the monster with trembling fingers. Due to her nervousness, she ended up speaking like a kindergartener, which made her inwardly think “oops,” but the man paid no mind and continued speaking calmly.
“That is a demon that invaded this world when the gates of the demon world opened. It’s an existence that will harm humans and destroy the world. Since no one has found a way to close the gates of the demon world, a crisis for the world will now arrive. From now on, demons like that will continue to come rushing into this human world.”
“Th-that’s…… Then what on earth should we do?”
Heesu’s voice trembled as much as her trembling fingers. Her way of speaking was still awkward beyond measure. As if trying to reassure such a Heesu, the man gently placed his hand on her shoulder and said with emphasis:
“That’s why I came here. I received a mission to find the ‘chosen one’ and save this world.”
Upon hearing those words, Heesu’s heart beat even faster. It pounded like crazy. Heesu tried to suppress it while looking straight at the man.
‘Say it, quickly. That it’s me!’
Holding back the urge to shout that immediately, she waited for the person to continue speaking.
“Yes, the moment I saw you, I could tell at a glance. The fact that you are that very ‘chosen one.'”
‘Yes!!’
Heesu desperately held back the urge to cheer. If she could, she wanted to dance wildly as if possessed, but she held that back too.
But no matter how much she held back and endured, the corners of her mouth kept twitching upward. Heesu trembled as she tried to keep her mouth corners in place, and when that didn’t work, she pressed them down with her fingers. She tried to create an expressionless face, but sadly, it was a strange expression that anyone could see right through.
“H-how could that be……. I’m just an ordinary person. How could someone like me with no power do such an incredible thing…….”
Trying hard to suppress her voice from getting excited, Heesu answered as calmly as possible. She was putting in great effort, but sadly, to anyone listening, it sounded like she was reading from a textbook.
Fortunately, the other party didn’t seem to mind that much. Rather, he firmly grasped Heesu’s hand and delivered a decisive speech.
“That’s not true. I clearly saw earlier. The brave courage hidden deep within you, your upright justice, your boundless goodness……. There’s no doubt. You are the chosen one spoken of in prophecy! Only you can save this world in crisis!”
“Ah, I can’t believe it.”
Heesu read from the textbook again. She groaned while covering her face with her palms, pretending to agonize.
Actually, it was becoming hard to hold back her laughter anymore. It would be best to cover it up like this. But while she could cover her face, she couldn’t hide her trembling shoulders. Sadly, Heesu right now was clearly someone who was laughing excitedly to anyone watching.
Fortunately, this time too the other party seemed not to notice. He just looked at such a Heesu seriously and asked seriously:
“Will you do it?”
‘Deal!!’
“Yes, if someone like me is acceptable, I’d be glad to…….”
Heesu, who had been pretending to hesitate with her head bowed, answered. It was still textbook reading.
However, the man smiled.
It’s done now. It was an ominous smile as if such a voice could be heard.
But Heesu, who had her head bowed, couldn’t see that smile. Her heart was simply full of joy at the prospect of becoming a magical girl soon, so she couldn’t suspect anything.
