Chapter 49
This was what I’d been waiting for.
I answered the question with a very proud face. Bragging about my hard work to one of my few friends is always enjoyable.
“They say it’s a bedsheet treated with wax mixed with medicine so that moisture doesn’t soak through. Last time, you were acting like a patient with a nervous breakdown because of the bedding. So I ordered one while I was at it.”
“…”
At my triumphant explanation, Celesto only responded with silence.
But I wasn’t disappointed. It’s not like Celesto acting like this was anything new.
Leaving him be, I climbed back onto the bed. Then I began weaving the waterproof sheet, which had been vexing me all this time, in and out of the bed frame.
‘It’s not like we’re going to have s*x… but doing things on a wrinkled sheet would be uncomfortable too.’
But whether the problem was the waterproof sheet’s unique texture or my lack of experience, it wasn’t easy to get the sheet fully and properly fitted on the bed.
Watching me struggle, Celesto quietly opened his mouth.
“…What are you doing?”
“Can’t you see?”
I answered, catching my breath which had somehow risen up to my chin.
“I’m changing the sheets.”
“I thought you were fighting with the sheet.”
Celesto said incredulously. Judging by his expression, he was being sincere.
He strode across the bedroom.
“Why are you even doing that in the first place?”
“If I’d told a servant to put a waterproof sheet on the bed when I invited you over, I thought someone—who overthink things and worries unnecessarily—would whine about it again.”
“…”
Celesto fell silent again. This time, his face looked somewhat uncomfortable, as if he was suppressing something.
But it was only for a moment.
“Move.”
Leaving those words, Celesto removed me from the bed. Literally, as in, he set me down on the floor.
After a glance at the sheet, he skillfully spread it and fitted it over the bed.
Somehow, the sheet that had been a mess just moments ago was now perfectly smooth, without a single wrinkle.
“Wow…”
An admiring exclamation escaped me without meaning to.
‘For someone who looks like that, he’s good at making the bed…’
I was newly impressed by my friend’s appearance and talents.
Even from my personal, malicious, and subjective perspective, Celesto seemed a bit too good-looking to become a clergyman.
That was probably what made Count Castanor uneasy.
Considering he removed Celesto from the family along with Leocel, who was only two years apart from the heir.
‘If some influential family’s daughter fell for Celesto’s face and took him in as a live-in son-in-law, it would cause an uproar…’
As a rule, the more capable and ambitious a woman is, the more she wants a man with modest utility by her side.
And Celesto, with a face that seemed utterly devoid of any practical life skills, was truly the perfect ‘ornamental husband’ type.
…Anyway. That’s why it kept striking me as strange that Celesto was so skilled at housework.
‘Honestly, rather than changing the sheets without a single wrinkle, I’d have expected him to just glare until a servant did what he wanted.’
While I was nodding along with these thoughts, Celesto took off his coat.
With just one layer removed, his already large frame became even more strikingly prominent.
Then, in a voice that was incongruously small for his size, Celesto muttered.
“…What are you thinking about that’s got you staring like that?”
His voice even sounded a bit troubled. It was a type of reaction I had never seen from Celesto before.
“What? Are you talking to me?”
“…You’ve been standing there just staring at me this whole time.”
It was an unexpected remark.
‘Come to think of it, I have been observing him pretty blatantly.’
I nodded readily.
“Because you doing that kind of menial work is strange and doesn’t suit you.”
“You said the same thing last time… What exactly do you think of me? Everyone lives like this once they enter the monastery.”
Celesto said in a particularly irritable voice.
Then, without even asking my permission, he flopped down onto the bed. The waxed sheet rustled under his heavy weight.
“Damn. I almost got excited like an idiot.”
