As Ryan raised the corner of his mouth and turned away, he thought that handing out apology cards to the nobles was like throwing wood into a blazing fire.

‘By evening, the salons will be overflowing with stories about Marquis Limms.’

And, as expected, the direction of the stories would follow exactly how Dehart and Ryan had hoped. With a sigh of relief, Ryan turned his attention to the apology cards, pondering over what words he should write.

“Sir Ryan…!”

“What is it?”

A knight hurriedly ran up to Ryan, whispering something in his ear. With a slight nod, he turned and headed not for his office, but toward the Latour hall.

* * *

The sun, appearing late, settled high in the sky. One by one, the servants who had woken up began bustling about, starting their morning duties, their sounds echoing through the estate.

Sebelia quietly looked out the window before turning her head. Dehart lay on the thin carpet.

“It seems your aide is searching for you.”

Sebelia’s fingertips gently brushed Dehart’s cheek.

“Why didn’t he come earlier?”

After learning everything, he shouldn’t have suffered alone—he should have come to her. If he had, he wouldn’t have had to cry himself into exhaustion alone. Yet, once again, he hurt himself outside of her sight.

“Still so arrogant and selfish to the end.”

Sebelia looked down at Dehart, who had lost consciousness, with a bitter smile. A small sigh escaped her lips.

He didn’t speak a word about Silas, but Sebelia could tell. No matter how it happened, he had finally discovered the ugly secret that the Wheddon family had desperately hidden.

That the beloved youngest daughter of the Wheddon family was, in fact, a despised, filthy illegitimate child since birth. And that Silas had tried to use the worthless illegitimate child to extract information about the North.

I don’t know how he found out. The Wheddon family servants, like my father, are all deceitful people.

Sebelia couldn’t help but let out a small, bitter laugh as her fingers brushed Dehart’s stubbled chin.

“It seems my words were indeed shocking.”

It seemed that the fact that he hadn’t apologized properly had truly struck him deeply.

I didn’t expect him to suffer this much.

She had known he harbored feelings for her. But she hadn’t expected him to agonize over the past to this extent. Watching him kneel before her in this miserable state felt strange.

I wasn’t happy. I couldn’t even feel the bitter thrill of it. Rather than my resentment being relieved, I… I…

Seeing him broken, crying, it saddened her terribly. She realized that both of them were lacking people. She had come to understand that there was never a happy ending for them from the beginning, and it made her laugh at how foolish she had been.

Would it have been better if you had married someone else?

Sebelia looked down at Dehart with shadowed eyes.

At one point, she had laid everything at his feet. Having never received affection from her blood relatives, she had given everything to this newly found family.

She had done it because she knew she wouldn’t receive even a shred of affection otherwise. She knew that even if she gave all of herself, she would still fall short of receiving the slightest attention from such a remarkable person.

But the sincerity she placed at his feet was eventually crushed underfoot.

What a foolish thing to do.

Sebelia rested her chin on her knees, hugging her legs.

Ignorant, foolish… inexperienced. I thought it would work, I thought if I lowered myself and worshiped and loved you, I would be loved in return.

It was the only method she had learned from her father. By lowering herself and obeying his words, she could at least receive a brief glance. For Sebelia, that was the only way to receive a family’s attention and affection.

But she had belatedly realized that this wasn’t a way to be loved—it was just placing herself at the bottom of the relationship. And she had realized that this distorted the relationship itself.

It was a flawed beginning from the start. Yes, we both misbuttoned the first button, so to speak.

Even if it wasn’t for her father’s actions, their relationship would have ended in a bad way anyway. Thinking this, Sebelia let out a quiet, bitter laugh.

Both she and he had been utterly foolish.

“Ugh…”

At that moment, Dehart stirred and groaned. His body, lying on the thin carpet, trembled intermittently. Sebelia stood up and gently covered him with a thick blanket.

His face was pale as he exhaled evenly.

As she looked down at him, her blue eyes were filled with conflicting thoughts. But soon, the emotions clouding her vision slowly settled.

His golden eyes, which glimmered beautifully in the sunlight, slowly began to open. As Sebelia watched, her blue eyes trembled. Unaware of this, Dehart, as soon as he regained some clarity, immediately searched for her.

“…Bella?”

Sebelia raised her hand to cover his eyes. She didn’t want him to see her face right now.

“Let’s talk after we rest.”

Leaving Dehart with a dazed expression, Sebelia climbed onto the bed. She felt as though his gaze was still lingering on her even as she lay under the blankets.
