Chapter 159
“If they’re mixed blood, you mean those humans created through dark sorcerers’ experiments?”
“Yes. That’s right.”
The dark sorcerers had carried out horrific experiments in order to extract more of the demon race’s mana, which formed the foundation of dark magic. That was the ‘half-human, half-demon’ experiment the dark sorcerers had secretly conducted throughout the country ten years ago.
Combining demons or magical beasts with humans, or forcing them to bear their children… a literally horrific experiment.
That experiment brought the dark sorcerers to the surface, and because of it, the enraged citizens and the Emperor declared that the dark sorcerers would be purged.
The dark sorcerers were helplessly eliminated, and the place where the few surviving groups fled was around Dongguk and the Holy Kingdom bordering it.
Perhaps the dark sorcerers, who had lost all their power like that, had gradually recovered their strength over time. In recent years, news of dark sorcerers had been heard from time to time, and lately, rumors had spread that some had even been seen openly revealing themselves as dark sorcerers.
They must have something to rely on, said the person who had seen them.
‘They do have something to rely on.’
Namely, the temple, which possessed power comparable to the Emperor’s, was backing them.
The one giving them full support was the next Pope, Kyte. Since he was gradually becoming more popular than the current Pope and gaining power, there was bound to be plenty of scraps falling to the dark sorcerers as well.
Newbie dark sorcerers who didn’t know any better would probably be walking around boldly, but the real ones were surely hiding carefully and waiting for the right time.
Aiming for the time when Kyte ascended to the papal seat and the Emperor lost his real power.
Anyway, that was what happened ten years ago, and most of the half-human, half-demon humans born from those unethical experiments were culled and died. Even if they survived, they would likely be living barren lives, ostracized and pointed at as ominous beings.
Among those living such unfortunate lives, there was someone I was looking for. A man with black hair and purple eyes. In the original story, his name was ‘Eton,’ and he was an expert on all things.
Fortunately blessed with the demon race’s high intelligence, there was almost no knowledge he didn’t possess. He was especially learned when it came to the bodies of living creatures, and he mainly earned money by curing illnesses in livestock. Because there was no one who would pay to hire Eton, who lived in the shadows.
On top of that, Eton borrowed the power of special chemical materials he alone had developed and dark magic spells, rather than the herbs or divine power people usually used, so everyone avoided him.
However, they said that with a single bottle of medicine he made, even a dying cow would leap to its feet and plow a field, so his skill alone was apparently worth trusting.
The episode where Eton appeared in the original story was the episode where Rozemian ended the epidemic that had broken out in the capital. Rozemian had certainly cured the entire epidemic with tremendous divine power, but she was troubled when the rashes on people’s bodies didn’t subside.
And after asking around, she learned that the rashes were caused by bedbug bites, so Rozemian went to find Eton and obtained a pest extermination medicine. Thanks to that, all the bedbugs died and Rozemian gained even more fame, but Eton, who was criticized for supposedly using dark magic, hid himself somewhere even deeper.
Afterward, Rozemian searched for him, but no one heard any news of anyone seeing him.
That was all I remembered about Eton, and for now, the important fact was that Eton was the best talent who could supply emergency medicine to my convenience store.
What else could matter besides that?
Eton was smart. And by now, no one would have recognized his genius, so he was certain to be living in poverty. If so, wouldn’t the contract asking him to supply medicine to my convenience store be easy to conclude?
Since he was likely living somewhere in the shadows of Raptero, I had asked Truu, who was close to the people of Pont-Sif and would be hearing news from the many people visiting the temple.
Opening the store came before finding a pharmacist, so for now, I decided to leave it to Truu.
“Mm. If a de… demon mixed-blood person was nearby, th-there would probably have been rumors… I’ll look into it for now!”
Truu’s eyes darted around all over the place as he nodded stiffly.
“Thank you.”
Feyden and I watched Truu crunching away and eating his snack deliciously for a long while. He ate so well that just watching him made me understand what it meant to feel full from seeing someone eat.
Truu took Feyden’s hand, stood up, and waved gently in front of the shop door.
Watching that adorable sight, a wicked desire slowly rose in me, wondering, ‘Wouldn’t the store become a huge success if I made Truu the promotional face of the shop?’
“We’re going.”
“Yes. Take care. And come tomorrow to help with the shop.”
“I heard your wishful thinking loud and clear.”
This man.
“Who knows! Maybe the shop will become a huge hit, and I’ll hire an unemployed jobless man as a clerk!”
“I might not have a job, but it’s not like I don’t have money.”
“And who gave you that money?”
“Enough. I’m already getting requests and offers to join from here and there. You seem to think I’m some idler who does nothing but play around.”
“Yup.”
“You’re getting cheeky.”
Feyden sharply raised one eyebrow.
