Isaac, who had been looking down at Ivonne with a cold gaze, clenched his small fist and called her name.

“Ivonne.”

“Hmm…?”

“Who’s the most important person to you?”

“That is…”

“Who is it?”

“Ah, Isaac…”

“Right. The most important person to you is me. So, you don’t really need to see anyone else.”

“But—”

“My words.”

“……”

“You’re going to listen to my words, right?”

His face that was softly smiling, was still as gentle and caring as always, but his dark green eyes, glowing with an icy light, were cold and distant. Sometimes, Ivonne found Isaac’s stern gaze frightening and unpleasant.

It felt suffocating. It was as though she was being tightly bound by something. But Ivonne was too young to fully grasp this feeling and recognize the discomfort. Right now, all she had was Isaac. If even Isaac left her, she would be alone.

‘I don’t want to be alone. It’s scary.’

No matter how good the people around her were, the only person who had been with her from the moment she opened her eyes until now was Isaac.

“Yes.”

So, Ivonne had to obey him. She had to, especially if he showed this side of himself.

“Good girl.”

Isaac patted Ivonne’s head as if he had never acted coldly toward her. She liked his touch, needed it, and that was why she followed his every word.

Even if the warmth was absent from the palm that stroked her hair.

⚜ ⚜ ⚜

“So, this is the Sortenic Empire…”

Ivonne couldn’t help but marvel. The worn-out brown hood she wore scratched her cheek, making it itch, and as she pulled it off and looked around, she saw tall buildings and clean, beautiful people walking by.

“It smells nice on the streets.”

In the streets of the Ortensia Republic, all she ever smelled was the odor of cow manure or freshly overturned soil. Sometimes, it was the scent of sweat from the hardworking farmers. Having lived in such a small, rural place and now coming to this bustling city, it felt like a whole new world.

“Come here, Ivonne. The place we’re going is over there.”

“Hmm?”

Ivonne wanted to admire the dazzling and beautiful clothes visible through the transparent glass. Thanks to the magic lamps illuminating them, the sparkling jewels looked like stars visible even in daylight. But Isaac led her down to a dirty alley.

“Stay here.”

Isaac lightly tapped Ivonne’s forehead. Ivonne, as usual, prepared to be stroked. But today, when his palm moved down toward her forehead, she briefly closed her eyes. When she opened them again, the touch was gone.

Startled, she looked around.

“…Huh? Why am I here?”

Ivonne had lost all memory.

‘Oh, right. My parents were killed by robbers…’

In fact, Ivonne had lost all the memories from the year she spent with Isaac. New memories were slowly and distortedly piling up in her body. Though there were gaps and discrepancies, now was not the time to be confused about it.

“Help, please!”

A young boy was running toward her. His blonde hair was tousled with sweat, and his blue eyes were filled with tears.

It was Blitzen Ulfest.

⚜ ⚜ ⚜

The sky was unusually blue with the chirping of birds, and it was a beautiful day. Just that alone was enough to make anyone want to go outside, but for Blitzen, there was also a sense of duty.

“I have to go out. I must go!”

The voice echoed in his head. It was telling him to go outside and follow the instructions to come here. Unable to defy the voice ringing in his mind since early morning, Blitzen suddenly left the Count’s residence.

“Young master, please go slowly! You’ll fall if you’re not careful!”

“It’s fine. I’ll attend to him closely.”

The escort knight followed Blitzen closely, but Blitzen ignored him and ran ahead.

“Haha, is he really that eager?”

“It’s the first time we’ve seen him so lively since the Yucorallini Island incident.”

The governess whispered to the maid. Watching Blitzen’s young back with a satisfied look, the governess’s eyes darkened.

“Yes, I just hope that incident won’t leave him with bad memories…”

It was well-known that Blitzen lacked magical talent, but having it become a source of ridicule in front of his cousin was a different matter. Since returning from Yucorallini Island, Blitzen had been deeply saddened by the mockery he had endured.

‘Dreaming, experiencing fits…’

For a while, he had lost his appetite and drive, spending gloomy days in his bedroom. If Count Ulfest, Blitzen’s father, hadn’t forcefully barged in to drag him out, that period would have lasted even longer.

“I almost fainted when the Count personally took action.”

“Well, that’s what fathers do.”

The maid said, and the governess smiled warmly again. After a long conversation with the Count, Blitzen still looked gloomy, but he was no longer trapped in his sadness as before.

‘And today, he even went out to cheer himself up first.’

Perhaps the sharp conversation he had with his father had given him new motivation. Even as the two of them whispered to each other, Blitzen was running ahead, determined. The maid stomped her foot and said,

“Ah, he’s already that far ahead! If we don’t hurry, we’ll miss him!”

“Yes, let’s hurry.”

The governess closed the parasol she had been holding open for Blitzen and grabbed her skirt.
